Just wanted a few opinions...

I plumped for a 5600X and B450 Tomahawk Max II for my sons first build. A friend pointed a deal for a ASUS PRIME H610M-K D4 + Intel Core i3 12100F CPU Bundle for £180 as opposed to nearly 300 for the former....!
My son is still happy, and I realise the 5600 is still a cracking processor, but I cannot help feel I've not gotten the best deal for him!

Just wondered what others thoughts are before it's too late to send stuff back (assuming I can!).

The 12100 is quality for sure, shame about the board prices and limitations on some of them. It is a 4core at the end of the day, so time will tell how that works out. I don't think you've chucked away money by any means, but if you were budget conscious it's obviously not the best choice. But the 5600x could well pay for itself in the future. He's got a well recommended board to boot too.

The 5600X is hardly a slouch and will require replacing later than the 12100. They almost trade blows under single core conditions, while the 5600X is better under multi core conditions, not sure what his use case is though.

Still got a decent upgrade path and I imagine the 5600X will hold its value better than the 12100, especially as it's got the extra cores. With the direction technology is moving, I wouldn't opt for less than 6 cores these days.

If it makes you feel any better, I recently replaced my 3600 with a 5800X right before prices dropped  talk about buyer's remorse...

Nothing wrong with a 5600X however you could have got a 12400F + decent B660 for around £300, while the CPUs perform similarly the B660 is way ahead of B450 in terms of connectivity and features and will also offer another generation of CPU upgrade further down the line.

Be content with what you have, it’s a great setup that should do your son for three years or more and there’s a clear upgrade path to a 5800x or even 5900x in the future.
