Hey guys,

I recently purchased new components for my first build from overclockers and was wondering (due to general opinion on this forum) whether the RAM choice was correct simply because I went 1GB instead of 2GB. Its the Geil ultra 1GB PC2 6400. I really couldn't afford 2GB so bought the best 1GB that I could but should I have tried to stretch to 2GB? Will it make a significant difference over 1GB?

the rest of the spec is:

Intel Core 2 Duo E4300
Gigabyte DS3
BFG 3DFuzion 7600GT
My 80GB hard disk
Titan Vanessa S-Type Cooler
Akasa Fan Controller
520W PSU from elsewhere
Case from elsewhere
Logitech Ex110 Keyboard/Mouse
LiteON DVD RW
19" Widescreen TFT

its not really going to be heavily gamed on or gamed proeprly at all really but will be doing a lot of multitasking

Just built an S3 (just like the DS3) with the E4300 and a gig of ram. 2x512 just like yourself. Excellent system and it has 2 more ram slots for easy upgrade later... so I would not worry - your system will be a screamer once you overclock to 3.0GHz+ ;-)

1GB is perfect unless you are running Vista. 2GB makes a difference but it is not night and day.

Next gen games will likely need 2Gig - but are you playing them this week? No!

Buy the ram cheaper when you need it, then.

normally i have emails running constantly along with 5 or 6 internet windows open as well as MSN Messenger and Winamp (Media player). I've always gt background processes runnign including norton and ad watch and sometimes have scans running in the background too. I don't really use photoshop or much encoding

1GB will really be OK, though it'll be easy to upgrade later anyway, should the need arise.

Please drop Norton, though. Look at NOD32 or Kaspersky. Much more efficient apps.

sorry for sounding a little stupid but what wrong with norton? being using it for years and found nothign wrong? someone enlighten me please

Back in Windows 98 there was a strong argument for Norton Utilities. They were a bit of a resource hog - slowing the experience down - but had things that the operating system couldn't do (emergency bootable recovery disks on a ZIP drive for instance), or that you couldn't get free at the same level of reliability.

When we move in Win 2000 and XP the once little Norton Utilities expands to cover many facets. However it remains a large resource hog, and can be the source of obscure troubleshooting errors, especially with networking. It keeps you 'safe' at the expense of treating you like an idiot. It also costs money. With 2000 and XP there are now a lot of free Apps that you can use to replace the paid for elements fo Norton. Example par excellence is AVG Free. It is a small memory foot print app, so it uses less resources, that does everything Norton does and for nowt.

It remains useful for your Grandparents to give them the warm sense of self assurance of buying a 'Security Brand'. However it is expensive, slow and slows down your computer to any one who configures their own computer with a little confidence.

If it's a gaming machine then yes you should have purchased 2GB

i would say get 2gb > 1gb whatever machine it is. i dont believe in spending money on performance ram, it simple isnt worth the outlay and doesnt bring any benefits worth a toss. the key decider is your budget and whether it stretches to 2gb or not. 1gb is more than fine for light tasking and browsing:)

well i bought the norton 2005 off ebay so will be installing that simply for the peace of mind thing. i've used it so long and even though it might be a resource hog until i find something else worthy of what norton does then i'll install that

Well since you're going to keep on using Norton then I would upgrade to a faster CPU and more memory, because with Norton you're gonna need it!

Norton is unstable bloatware rubbish. You can use free alternatives which are far superior pieces of software.

A bit stupid to say "I bought it so I'm going to use it" even if that software is rubbish. I've tried Norton in the past, made my system unstable and slow down considerbly.

just about any free software does what norton does and better. its simply idiocy to actively use norton against the recommendations of people here when we really do have your best interests at heart:)

thats true :) can anyone suggest to me what would be a good antivirus/utilities program(s) i could get then. I know AVG happens to be a decent antivirus program. has it got real time scanning though cos i know norton does have background protection from virus and stops them in their tracks. i also like the utilites that norton has. anyone know of programs that does things like that. might my motherbaord even have things like that (Gigabyte DS3) cos i noticed it has some bundled stuff with it :D
