Have I missed anything with this build?

My first post here so before anything else 'Hi guys...' :)

This is my proposed build - and apart from it not having an SSD (I'll add that when funds permit) does anyone have any comments? Is there anything that will give me a problem that you can see? Is there anything you would substitute without spending a lot more cash?

The proposed use for this is No Man's Sky and Star Citizen both of which have high graphics requirements

MSI Z170A Gaming M5 Intel Z170 (Socket 1151) DDR4 ATX Motherboard
Intel Core i5-6600K 3.9GHz (Skylake) Socket LGA1151 Processor
Asus GeForce GTX 970 TURBO OC 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics
Kingston Fury Black 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 PC4-19200C15 2400MHz
Seagate 1TB 7200RPM SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache HDD
OcUK 24x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter
In-Win 703 Midi Tower - Black / Red
Akasa AK-CC4009EP01 Venom Pico Compact CPU Cooler
Pure Power L8 600W '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply

Many thanks y'all

Allan

If you leave your budget I'm sure some wizards here could work in an SSD. Also when you view basic there is a BB code button that gives you a nicely formatted basic for the forums so it shows the prices of items and total.

Something like this could help kick off the savings. Also could be a decent idea too get the 390, recently seems too be over taking the 970GTX and closing in on the 980GTX.

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £319.48
(includes shipping: £10.50)

If you're spending that much on a build, you should definitely include the ssd into it. It's only around £60 ish for a 250gb or so.

Hi again and thanks for the replies...

I've not built a rig for a couple of years - but it used to be kinda accepted wisdom that Nvidea cards worked better with Intel systems, and Radeon cards worked better with AMD systems, so I didn't really look too hard at the 390. Is there still any truth in that BTW?

Fallen God - I appreciate your link to the board/cpu bundle (good value!), but I know someone who has the Killer E2400 Gigabit LAN onboard and it really does seem to make a difference - so that along with other MSI board features is why I spent the extra £20 and chose the one I did

I intend to put an SSD in but want a decent size (500Gb min) and that's working out at around £150 which will have to wait until next pay day :) I might however be able to stretch to a Hybrid Drive but I don't know anyone who has had experience of one. Thoughts guys?

Anyway - this is what I'm looking at:

Toshiba Hybrid 500GB 2.5" SSHD SATA 6Gbps Solid State Hybrid Drives (MQ02ABF050H)= £47.99

OR

Samsung 500GB 850 EVO SSD 2.5" SATA 6Gbps 32 Layer 3D V-NAND Solid State Drive (MZ-75E500B/EU)= £139.99
Crucial MX200 500GB 2.5" SSD SATA 6Gbps 7mm Solid State Drive (CT500MX200SSD1)= £139.99

Any preference between Samsung and Crucial?

Thanks again for your comments

Swap the psu. The one you selected is mediocre and only has 540w on the 12v rail. It's enough for the system you have selected but you can get much better for the money.

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £140.08
(includes shipping: £11.10)

The Antec is built by Seasonic and is hardwired like the BeQuiet but is gold rated and has a 5 year warranty and 540w on the 12v rail.

The Superflower is gold rated, fully modular, has a 5 year warranty and can output all of it's 550w on the 12v rail. The downside is that it has bright white leds where you plug the cables in that can't be turned off.

If you want a bit more power in case you want to add a second card at some point you can have a XFX TS750w for £72.95. It's a gold rated, hard wired unit built by Seasonic with a 5 year warranty and a 12v rail of 744w.

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £83.45
(includes shipping: £10.50)

The Samsung ssd is much better than the Crucial.

Thanks for your recommendations - I'll take that on board

BTW - did you add up what my power requirements were with suggesting 750w for a second card or was that just based on experience and good practice? I've not actually added up power requirements myself, but as I've used 500w for previous builds I'd gone for 600w just to be on the safe side :)

If you were to go for a second card then I would be wanting more headroom than a 550w psu would give me. Another reason I suggested it is that it's only £8 more than the crappy 600w (that can't deliver 600w where it's needed) that you picked. More headroom means a cooler and quieter running psu.

One thing I forgot about the Superflower Leadex Gold 550w I recommended is that it has hybrid fan control so below a certain temperature the fan is off.

Thank you Pastymuncher (l love the handle btw...) I will take your advice :)

May I also ask yourself and anyone else reading if you consider it worth going for a Hybrid HDD such as:

Toshiba Hybrid 1.0TB 2.5" SSHD SATA 6Gbps Solid State Hybrid Drives (MQ02ABD100H) = £59.99

Over my first choice of

Seagate 1TB 7200RPM SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache HDD - OEM (ST1000DM003) = £39.95

I have no experience with Hybrid drives (and I may well ask this on a separate thread as well) but are they worth the extra approx 50% cost? Or am I better waiting until I can get a full SSD? (at approx £140)

Once again thanks for all the helpful responses...

Allan

Just to close this thread down, and with thanks to those who offered helpful advice - especially PastyMuncher...

Here is my final build (ordered and paid for!)

In-Win 703 Midi Tower - Black / Red = £54.95
MSI Z170A Gaming M5 Intel Z170 (Socket 1151) DDR4 ATX Motherboard = £142.99
Intel Core i5-6600K 3.9GHz (Skylake) Socket LGA1151 Processor = £209.99
Asus GeForce GTX 970 TURBO OC 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card = £269.99
Kingston Fury Black 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 PC4-19200C15 2400MHz Dual Channel Kit = £64.99
XFX TS 750W 80 Plus Gold Power Supply - Black = £72.95
Toshiba Hybrid 1.0TB 2.5" SSHD SATA 6Gbps Solid State Hybrid Drives = £59.99

Total: £927.53 (includes shipping: £14.70)

Looks OK? I thinks so...

Allan

I wouldn't have bothered with a SSHD. You would have been better getting a HDD and a separate SSD.

Something like this:

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £103.88
(includes shipping: £9.90)

Or an extra tenner gets you a 250GB Samsung 850 EVO

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £74.69
(includes shipping: £8.70)

Thanks Lee - interesting...
Maybe a dumb question, but isn't a Hybrid drive a bit like this - but the SSD bit is integrated actually in the HD? I'm asking because I have no experience of Hybrid drives. I've also heard that it can be a bit tricky to set up an SSD to work as quick memory access for an existing HD?

No. When you first install programs it works just like a normal hdd. As you use the pc it "learns" which programs you use the most and caches them to the ssd. I wouldn't buy one personally and used to have a ssd for windows, steam etc and a hdd for my photo's etc. My latest configuration has seen me do away with a hdd altogether and I have a 250Gb ssd for Windows and a 960 Gb ssd for everything else.

There's a comparison here between several hdd's, SSD'd and one of Seagate's 2tb SSHD drives. I can't find any reviews of the Toshiba you have gone for.

Hybrid drives give hardly any REAL performance gains over a normal mech drive.

A proper SSD is still majorily faster for sure.
