Have I over-spec'd things?

Hey,

So I have a case being delivered, and finally decided on some kit to go in it:

Intel Core i7 920 D0 Stepping (SLBEJ) 2.66Ghz (Nehalem) (Socket LGA1366) - Retail
Corsair XMS3 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 (1600MHz) Tri-Channel
Microsoft Windows 7 Professional 64-Bit - OEM
Samsung SpinPoint F3 1TB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM
Noctua NH-U12P SE2 Dual Fan Quiet CPU Cooler*
5850 (which ever I manage to order ;))

PSU:
Corsair HX 850W ATX Modular SLI Compliant Power Supply
Is this totally over spec'd? Its a £130 PS
Not looking for massive oc'ing - looking for a very reliable 3.6GHz

Motherboard:
Unsure about this...I'm not a natural oc'er, looking for ease of oc and super reliability.So...
Asus P6T Intel X58

Or would a more expensive board offer easier clocking + more reliability?
Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5
or
Asus P6TD Deluxe Intel X58

I've almost got this spec nailed down :D Would really appreciate any input

Thanks guys.

(* = I know its retail + custom cooler, but for few £ difference its worth having another cooler around?)

PSU overkill unless your thinking about crossfire / SLI in the future, otherwise look at the Corsair 650w psu.

All three motherboards are all good, I run the UD5 which I have no complaints, have a look at the specs and see if one has what you might fancy, ie on-board ESATA or spacing on the PCI slots.

850w psu is a bit of an overkill as you could run 2 gtx 295's on that :P. I would drop it down to a 750w to save mobey but if money isn't an issue, stay with it.

looks good however i would go for the Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD3R motherboard, it is very good and £60 cheaper than the Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5

Thanks for all the replies (talk about quick!)

Motherboard:
Only thing that put me off the UD3R was the reduction in memory slots. This machine won't be changed for a while so bunging more memory will probably
be a mid-life upgrade :)

I need to do a bit more reading comparing these boards it seems :)

PSU:
Ok, looks like I went a bit overboard with 850W :D
Corsair seems like a quality brand, I'll go for something slightly lower rated... Would you still suggest a modular PS though? Are there any drawbacks?

Thanks again :)

I have limited faith in m$ doing windows xp emulation competantly, but this may be bias on my part. I certainly wouldn't pay a premium for it instead of running a copy of XP in virtual box.

650W captive corsair is probably the one to go for. Modular power supplies have no significant drawbacks. Some people think they're better for airflow, I think it's a fashionable thing more than anything else.

The Asus P6T SE would be my choice if not overclocking much. I daresay it's quite capable up to 4ghz or so anyway, since the memory controller moved onto the processor the board doesn't matter so much.

1600mhz ram may be excessive, however I'd want this.

Nice specification.

Thanks for all the input! :)

Looks like my case (a fractal design R2) won't support PS's longer than 170mm if i use the case fan located next to the PS and if they are running 'fan to the ground' at the bottom of the case.
In which case, both modular corsair 850W and 750W wont fit as they are 180mm long...
So, if i decide not to use that bottom fan mounting point, would a PS with the fan pointing inwards be ok? Or is that too much heat?

The 650W modular Corsair is only 150mm long though, but is that enough power for my system in the long-run? Would it run another graphics card if i decided to add one? I don't really have a feel for how much power I'm needing...

Sorry for the long-winded newbie questions;) any help appreciated :)

That's exactly what the XP Mode in 7 Pro is though; a virtual machine running XP.

Just going to bump this one last time :)

Will this be ok on a 650W Corsair PS ?

Intel Core i7 920 D0 Stepping (SLBEJ) 2.66Ghz (Nehalem) (Socket LGA1366) - Retail
Corsair XMS3 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 (1600MHz) Tri-Channel

Noctua NH-U12P SE2 Dual Fan Quiet CPU Cooler*
5850 (which ever I manage to order )
Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5 or Asus P6TD Deluxe Intel X58
Case with 3x 120mm & 1x 140mm fans

If so, how 'marginal' would it be?
Would a few more hd's be ok? how about another gfx card?

Thanks for all the help :)
