An image macro is a picture with superimposed text, often for humorous effect.

Not to be confused with macro photography.

The term "image macro" was first used on the Something Awful forums.[3] The name derived from the fact that the 'macros' were a short bit of text a user could enter that the forum software would automatically parse and expand into the code for a pre-defined image,[3] relating to the computer science topic of a macro, defined as "a rule or pattern that specifies how a certain input sequence (often a sequence of characters) should be mapped to an output sequence (also often a sequence of characters) according to a defined procedure."

Though modern-day image macros may not follow the literal concept of a macro, the name is still often used in accordance with their definition as described above.

Well I never. I rarely see them on here so it's just one of those things that comes and goes. I hardly see demotivational posters any more.

That, for example, was a fine use of one :p Otherwise, yes, if you stay on a forum for any length of time, certain things get overused.

:eek::mad::rolleyes::cool::p;):D:o:(:):confused:

These are the image macros, for people not comprehending.

I think the OPs point is why use a smiley macro when you can just write your post better in order to convey the emotion which would improve the quality of peoples posts.

No, that is not his point at all?! haha

The pictures with the funny words, instead of a post.. are his point :p

I think image macros can be funny - and I don't think they're going to die out any time soon.

The content will evolve of course, but it's not the way the information is conveyed that will get boring, only the information itself. Therefore as new puns and 'trends' come through, the content will remain fresh.

For me, I don't think I'll get bored of them.
