"A picture is worth a thousand words". In the right thread a picture really can express more than words. Adding words to the image defeats the purpose of said image. Or could be considered subtitles for simpletons that need humorous retorts spoon fed to them.

I think the OPs point is why use a smiley macro when you can just write your post better in order to convey the emotion which would improve the quality of peoples posts.
