I think the article is a bit misleading. It appears that the security guard who was offended wasn't actually the one who the comment was said to.

Given I didn't know this, I'm not sure how many others didn't. In my mind, the whole article read as if it was a burqa:

So if I am a racist for my views what are the French government because they banned the wearing of a Burqa in southern France?

Their ruling wasn't against the Burqa, rather the banning of hiding your face in public. Obviously that affects Burqa wearers, but it wasn't a direct ban.

Just because I hate being wrong, and even if you aren't participating in this thread anymore... The law in French is:

interdiction de la dissimulation du visage dans l'espace public

In English that translates to

The banning of concealing of the face in public spaces

(I translated it literally in case you wanted try and catch me out on that.)

In good English, that translates to: prohibitation of concealing your face in public spaces. Now, how does that target anybody specific. As others have said, it isn't just an issue of race, but more of security.
