I've only ever seen written smack talk. Perhaps its the games I play or the platform (PC) I game on, but usually VOIP is reserved for same team.

This video tells a different story (1:35):

If I wasn't a gamer I would have thought that gamers are vocally antagonistic to each other, but not in my experience.

If you complain able anything other than hacking, or spawnkilling you just look silly.

I guess it depends how you define "smacktalk". I've heard people being critical over VOIP, and having arguments, but rarely direct unfounded abuse of another user on the same voice channel.

By far the worst i've heard it on is consoles, usually from retarded American children. On the PC people tend to actually use team work and friendly banter.

Only on consoles, where it is absolutely unbridled, randomly attracted and almost uniformly racist.

On PC, idiots who would do it either just kick you from their game (for being too much of a nooooooooooob, duuuuuuude) or do their smack talk via written comms.

want to hear this? buy an xbox, ive heard things on there that make me fear for the future of the human race.

But it is sometimes very funny like watching daytime tv but you can tell them what you think of them.

On a PC? only ever talk to my freinds who by definition are not retarded racist doleys.

yep, xbl is the worst

one of my fondest memories of the 360 is this clan of southern-american boys who were SO leiry - i was about to leave, but decided to play the next map and this english guy sniped them all repeatedly - they were going nuts - it was the best voip ive ever heard :D :D :D

I used to raid with this one guy in WoW, around six of us on a skype at the time....

**** went down.

I had some one smack talking me on Left for Dead 2 for telling him and his girlfriend to hurry up, so I shotgunned them both and can of fuel too and hid just of sight of them. Cue more and worse smacktalk. :p

He added me to his Steam friends list later on and apologised and said he'd upset his girlfriend with the stuff he was coming out with. :p

Why is 'smacktalk' frowned upon, I loves it, if I can get to someone that much on a game that they lose all control I feel I have won.

Isn't life just a big game, unfortunately not GTA

Of course. Hear it all the time when playing games like COD, CS:S, BF, etc.
Stange that, I never hear it in team based VOIP; u can't talk to the enemy only type...

This is the distingtion between smacktalk and abuse. If you are bothering someone so that they "lose it" then you are no better than a hacker or griefer who's intention it is to antagonise.

It is very rare that I see someone trying to grief ect, and I don't agree with the way they portray gamers in the video that they are all mouthy little so'n'sos.

If someone does die in a unusual, spectacular way though its ok to point it out imo, somewhat depends on if its a public game or not.

It's not my fault if they lose it, I rarely do much talking and I'm not that good on games, I just like ending killstreaks.

Kind of a grey area then?

If you can give it you have to be able to take it.

They only time I find it annoying is when on an otherwise average game, there is one person on the opposing team typing "gjt" every single time they win, as if they have failed to realise they are not only talking to their team but the whole server.

As I said its rare that there is someone annoying in a game but its just in that video its like a generalisation from a non-gamer about all gamers which is almost prejudice!

Normally if people start giving me abuse I just reply in a civil sort of way over VOIP. You'd be surprised how people change their tune when they realise they are talking to an ACTUAL person :D
