I am using a sapphire X1950XT i picked up on the bay stupidly cheap as my inbetween card at the moment, as anyone who knows these cards is aware they run STUPIDLY hot and are proper noisy.
I was very kindly given a slightly modded Vortexx by Merlin5 on the forums as he couldnt get it to fit his 4870 (non reference). I have now stuck this on the X1950 and the results are VERY impressive.
idle temps were always circa 53-55c with the stock cooler and load temps in games like TDU and GTA IV (yep it runs it!) were into the low 90's which was rather scary and it sounded like a spitfire.
with this fitted I am getting 45 degree idle temps and after 30 or so minutes on GTA IV it never went over 70 degrees!!! thats a 20 degree drop....got to love that!. for what is a £12 heatsink, its a cracker!
standard VRM heatsink sneeks in nicely
