right, I had a quick browse, and i thought i might introduce a couple bands, or just see if people had heard of some new artists etc. aim: to kind of increase my awareness of what’s out there, i love finding and hearing new artists, mainly pick like a couple lines up from a film or program on TV, then have to find the full song, then usually end up buying the album. Anyway, my most recent purchases are:

Listing using this format:

1 Band/Artist Name
2 Album name
3 Year
4 Sounds Similar to?
5 How I found out about them
6 Band URL of sorts

1. Death Cab For Cutie
2. Plans
3. 2005
4. only just started listening to today, but im liking a lot
5. um, I was checking out AOL sessions and saw them there, so had a listen.

1. Waltham
2. Waltham
3. 2005
4. 3 doors down, nickelback, goo goo dolls
5. I was watching “MADE” on mtv and this chick wanted to become a rock chick, and the lead singer from Waltham was her coach, so I checked them out, and kind of like.
6. http://www.walthamtheband.com/

1. Chris Pierce
2. Static Trampoline
3. 2005 im guessing
4. very relaxing vocalist, like hmmm, matt costa.
5. I watched the film “Crash”, and one of his songs was in there, and I was like, wahey, that’s mellow, lemmie find that. So I searched and searched and eventually bought his albumn on ebay, from the States.

1. Better than Ezra
2. Before the Robots

4. hmmm, Linkin park, 3 doors down, they kind of have a rock style.

Tunng
Comments Of The Inner Chorus
2006
Postal Service, Death Cab, Iron&Wine - electronica meets folk
A regular random purchase, inspired by clicking 'related artists' links in allmusic

Rilo Kiley
More Adventurous
2004
A revved up Death Cab or the Breeders if they had a well-produced album
Bought Jenny Lewis' (lead singer) solo album on a recommendation from a friend, and liked it a lot, so bought Rilo's back catalogue, this album is the pick of a good bunch

Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan
Ballad Of Broken Seas
2006
Nick Cave, Tom Waits, Belle & Sebastian - it's a brilliant mix of gruff, growled lyrics (Lanegan) and etherial whispers (Campbell), creating a beautiful and ecclectic album
Am a fan of both Belle & Sebastian and QOTSA (whom Campbell and Lanegan have departed)

The Crimea
Tragedy Rocks
2005
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Easyworld, Seafood - chilled indie pop
Can't remember why I bought it, probably a whim as with all the most inspired purchases

1 Peeping Tom
2 Peeping Tom
3 2006
4 Mr. Bungle (a little bit). Hip-Hop-y influences
5 It's a Mike Patton project, and I loved his other work

Think Mr. Bungle/Faith No More, but more accessible. Definitely a great album. (Is on iTunes store if you want samples)

1. Anberlin
2. Never Take Friendship Personal
3. 2005
4. I'm not sure, they're just great.
5. A random browse of purevolume a couple of years ago.

If you like that make sure you have a listen to mark lanegan's albums, they're much better. I would recommend:

Mark Lanegan
Field Songs
2001
Slightly folk-oriented, sparse music focusing on his vocal abilities
He was the singer of the Screaming Trees, but has done solo work before and after this.

Open Hand
You and Me
2005
Not sure who they sound like, used to be a lot more emu before this album but change of lineup has changed the sound. A bit rock.
Bought it from a record shop on the off chance it might be good.

Clair de Lune
Marionettes
2005
Listen to them and find out. They have piano, guitar and drums. Generally quite laid back.
They were on deep elm so decided to see how they sounded.

Circa Survive
Juturna
2005
Singer has a high voice, contrapuntal guitars... quite a unique sound but does get a bit too much for a whole album.
I honestly can't remember why I decided to listen to them. It was a good decision though.

I could go on all night...

- Regina Spektor
- Soviet Kitsch
- 2004
- Sounds similar to... err, I don't know, maybe Kimya Dawson, Cat Power, The Dresden Dolls, but far better in my opinion.
- Heard about her ages ago through a music forum, went to Virgin and listened to clips of some of her stuff and really liked it.

Edit:

Just to add, Regina Spektor has a new album out on 10th July, called Begin To Hope.

I'm listening to a promo of it, and it's really excellent. :)

I have some Screaming Trees and Whiskey For The Holy Ghost, which is excellent too - will have to check out his other stuff (I chose to recommend Ballad... because it could lead people to discovering Screaming Trees, QOTSA and Belle & Seb more easily ;) )

Gonna also recommend:

Aberfeldy
Young Forever
2004
Erm, can't really think of anyone much similar, perhaps Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - kind of kitschy summery indie pop - I suppose Belle & Seb at a push

Absolutely love the following;

- Spoon
- Gimme Fiction
- 2005
- Not really sure but it was linked from Arcade Fire, New Pornographers et. al
- Found it after I picked up Arcade Fire - Funeral and followed recomended links from there

Just want to say thanks to ArcadeFire (the member) as I saw his name and sig so much I decided to check it out and it's great.

Trusted your music tastes enough to pop out and buy this today, and whoah, what an amazing voice - plus I am a big fan of piano-led music, especially with female vocalists. Will definately be looking to buy some more

/edit: just seen amazon has recommended this to me based on past purchases (namely Rilo Kiley, Jenny Lewis and Rachael Yamagata - who I would recommend to anyone who likes Spektor or Lewis), might have to check out its recommendations more often

And thanks for Rilo Kiley, I think you must have recommended them before, really good :)

1 Coldcut
2 Sound Mirrors
3 2006
4 Massive Attack, DJ Krush, DJ Food..
5 Saw them live a few years ago.

Not really unheard of, but they never seem to get as much recognition as they deserve. Awesome DJ's with a fantastic ear for mashups and some great collaberations - such as Roots Manuva on this album...

I know a lot of people will have heard of them on here but this album hasnt really been mentioned and it's awesome.

:D
