Haven't played games for around 5 years...help

i thought BFBC2 got slated by everyone

I think maybe you ate thinking of a different game? Bbfc2 seems to be universally popular, whereas medal of honour, codmw2 and codblops have all had there fair share of criticism.

Op- I would heavily reccomend mass effect 1&2.
Gta iv is a great game, but is fairly demanding - what are your system specs?
Batman arkhum asylum is very good.
Dirt 1&2 and grid are great driving games which are often on sale.

With less than 10hrs a week I am assuming you may not get the time to do much multiplayer? I am probably in a similar situation to you, with family commitments, I mostly find time to game in the late evening, so multiplayer is ruled out because I can't be speaking into a mic/ headset. All the games I mention above are excellent single player experiences. If you arexlooking for multiplayer then go for something like team fortress2 and bbfc2.

My other key recommendation for you go to savygamer.co.uk and check the pc section. It is basically a website that keeps track of deals. The big change over the last 5 yes is that the pc gaming Market has mostly shifted to online purchase and online delivery. E.g steam, gamersgate, direct2drive, greenmangaming, gog etc
Savygamer will let you know who has a sale on. There is normally a few games on a promotional sale every week.
Steam do massive sales a few times a year (e.g 75-80% off) I think there will be one soon for Easter so that would be aching time to stock up.

I rather enjoyed Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas. Both games are first person shooters with role playing aspects. You level up, assign points in to skills and perks and there is no right or wrong way to do things. You can be a good or an eval char and your actions effect certain aspects of the game.

My personal top 5

1. X3 Terran Conflict (So addictive my wife threatened divorce)
2. The Witcher (The best rpg of all time in my eyes)
3. Fallout (I feel this one is better than New vegas)
4. Borderlands (Feels fresh and new with its great art style)
5. Dragon Age Origins (Second one is crap)

One game I would put forward which I think would fit your bill is Portal.

It is an FPS puzzle game which you would be able to complete in one or two of your short gaming sessions. It is split into levels so makes perfect chunks for short hits.

It should form a nice reintroduction.

I've not played any games for over 5 years

You got some serious catching up to do :)

So many games and so little time.

If you are into fps then i'd go with thing's like:

Call of duty: modern warfare
Battlefield bad company 2
crysis (I have not yet played the 2nd one but have heard a lot of mixed reviews)
Call of Juarez (good wild west shoot em up)
Fallout 3 (not a pure fps but it should be played)
most of these have been mentioned by others already but you should most certainly try the Mass effect games. I am currently playing Mass effect 2 and am loving every minute of it.
Just cause 2? Again not really a fps but it's a great game that hould be played :)

Also try Stalker: shadow of chenobyl (pretty sure I did'nt spell that correctly)

For single player:

Amnesia: The Dark Descent (Seriously, unless you hate horror things, play it!)
Mass Effect 1 + 2 (Amazing action RPG's)
Dragon Age: Origins (Best fantasy RPG for a long while)
Crysis (buy warhead if you like the first)
Half Life 2 + episodes (Can't remember if this was released longer than 5 years ago or not, but if you haven't played it, I would buy it first)
Stalker: Shadow of Chenobyl (Get Stalker complete mod 2009)

For multiplayer:

Quake Live is all you need :p

Unless you prefer the more realistic tactical shooter, then I'd say Counter Strike (Source if you have never played CS before, 1.6 is too hard to get in to now imo, and is also more than 5 years old :P)

Don't bother with Call of Duty / BFBC2 for multiplayer, unless you're a total noob :p
