Having a FTTC line put in

FTTC comes in via the existing copper cable. The change is made at the cabinet end, where it's fed fibre from the exchange rather than copper on conventional ADSL.

You may be able to have the existing line extended and the master socket moved. I think its supposed to be within 3 metres of the original location but if your really nice and make the engineers job as easy as possible (shift any furniture etc.), they’ll probably put it where you want. That’s what happened for me. He extended the existing line with some 2 pair cat5 cable and was able to utilise a hole that was there for a Virgin phone line, which was just about big enough for both cables. Was then run around the side and front of the house, up in to an upstairs bedroom. Took him just under an hour so avoided any time related charges. Sync speed was actually slightly better than the estimate.

I routinely get additional broadband-only FTTC lines installed. BT, Vodafone, A&A all offer that service option. It doesn’t have to have a phone connection. If you don’t need a phone line then it makes sense to have it locked down so miscreants can’t dial out on it.
