Having a homepage on a wifi setup?

Just wondering on this. Dint have a clue to be honest, but how would I go about setting up a Wifi hotspot, like those you get around the place.

I mean, in having an unsecured Wifi zone, but when you connect to it, you get a homepage come up before anything else?

Some routers such as Drayteks let you set you set up a captive portal which can be a URL redirection to a web page or login.

I got a dreytek here too... I will dig it out and have a play.

Is not Gigabit and has no wireless however, so maybe it will maybe it wont, but I can easily throw a wireless router onto it to see if that does anything?

Ah, I got a 2820 Vigor and I had a play with it, but there is nothing that will do it on that.

However now that I know what I need, I have done some googling and I have found a few solutions and I have just bought myself a little router that has this built-in.

Lets see if I have fun learning or if I have my missus on my back for spending more money I dont have on toys that I dont need.

Ok, update:

I bought this pile of junk but I have to also pay a yearly fee.
There is no way ( seemingly ) to et around this to at least trial it.
So, I have returned it.

I have a half-reason to returning it , not just the costs, but also that I have a Libnksys here with the DD-WRT firmware on, and I have had a look and sure enough, it has these services in it, such as Sputnit, Wifidog and Chillidog or whatever? - Now, I have had a play with them, and the Chillii one is opensource?

Irritatingly, I have managed to get absolutely nowhere with that at all.

I have found a help page on how to set it up and I have been going through it but I am clearly a tool.

But hey-ho, this is the right place to be, so I will keep at it.

Just as a side note however...

Is there anything you can tell me that might help me settign it up?

Is there for example a simple step by step you can give me to do to get it up and running?

Like I said, een if I cannot log-in, even just a simple page that comes up every time you log in will be just fine... Im not even getting that.

( Actually I did... I got DD-WRT message and an enter button -but nothing else )

You need a proper setup. Try a PC running pfSense with a supported wireless card. It has all the captive portal stuff, and I'm currently running a 450Mbps wireless N access point off it no problems using the latest 2.2 alpha release. YMMV and it's not a point and click two minute setup. Well, it IS point and click but it's quite involved and you need to know WHAT to point and click, set up firewall rules etc to get it working. Google and their forums is your friend.

EDIT: AFAIK if you want to run a WAP properly under DD-WRT you have to pay, certainly for the x86 version which is about the only one worth using for any serious application. They're not that highly regarded in the open source networking world...
