I will try and keep this as short as possible. Before I go any further, I did search this forum and found lots of bits of helpful information, but nothing that fully answered my questions, hence the new thread.

I play rocket league and overwatch. I've been using a borrowed Samsung 27" with a VA panel since my old monitor broke down but my friend needed it back.

Decided that it's time I join 144hz, everyone raves how much better it is. After very little research (I didn't realise what a minefield it was at this time), i bought a BenQ 2411z. I based this purchase on the fact that the majority of Overwatch pros use this or the 2430. When the monitor arrived, my jaw nearly hit the floor at how god awful the colours were. There was also a stuck pixel which was very annoying. No amount of configuring could get the colours, no matter how many other peoples settings I tried, i wasn't satisfied and I returned it.

I started to research and at this point realised what an absolute minefield monitors currently are. I spoke to someone about monitors from reddit and he advised that if I wanted 144hz TN panel and was willing to spend a bit more, then I should get the Acer Predator XB241H. Now don't get me wrong, the colours out the box are so much better than the BenQ, hands down, however compared to the old Samsung VA panel I was using, the colours just don't compare.

This brings me to the point I am currently at with research. It seems that if you want good colours, IPS is the only way to go. Do I return this and get a 27" IPS 144hz panel? I've done research and there seems to be so many issues with BLB and glow on the only 2 monitors that meet this criteria for gaming which is the Asus and the Acer predator. £700 is a lot to drop on a monitor that I may need to send back several times to get a decent one.

Maybe I should get a 60hz, cheap IPS panel and wait for the technology to come on a bit?

Up until around a fortnight ago, I had no idea on all the different monitor panels etc and this has been an absolute eye opener for me.

Whatever information/advice people have to offer, I am all ears. If you have monitor recommendations then great, it would really be appreciated.

If you recommend a budget 60hz IPS 27", what would you recommend? If you recommend a 27" IPS, please also tell me what you would recommend.

Thank you in advance for any replies.

I feel your frustration over the whole monitor issue , I myself got a AOC 35" MVA Panel and it was ghastly and so within 24 hours it was back in the box and I'm getting my money back , Have to say though I have been pretty lucky with the two TN panels I have both are 144Hz , the ROG Swift ( B Grade ) is lovely , and the BenQ is also nice too.

Got a xb271hu here. Zero back light bleed and minimal ips glow. Fantastic monitor but away to swap it out for an ultra wide.

Not sure if date had anything to do with it but mine is under a year old. Was expecting loads of bleed and glow so pleasantly surprised. Just want more real estate now. It'll be available by end of week.

As in for sale? if so, could be interested. :)

IPS for colours, VA for blacks, TN for ms response times. Always been that way :)

Id happily recommend the Asus models, had two of the freesyncs with one gsync, sent the two freesyncs back as it wouldnt let me do surround, but they were perfect otherwise. Now have 2 x PG279Q's, had very minor backlight bleed on all of them out of the box, but that has now settled down and totally gone, at least as far as i can tell right now - never noticed it during use anyway. Bought them all more or less on release. Glow is an "issue" if you've never used IPS before, so it appears new to you, but it really isn't that bad, in day to day use you shouldn't notice - only when you are looking for it etc. Although comiung from a VA panel it might be much more pronounced to your eyes/brain due to the much better blacks on VA. IPS glow has been about the same on my older 27's and 30" panels as it is on these new asus ones, so it doesnt seem to change that much.

as far as 60hz ips goes, any brand with a decent warranty/build quality should be fine, the manufacturing process is pretty mature on those panels so should all be good by now. Or check out the MM if you want to save monies.

Keep an eye on the usual place. ;)

I am new here, where is that?! :D

Thank you for the info, still very unsure on what to do. Not sure if I should just get a cheap-ish 60hz IPS until prices come down on 144hz ips screen.

He means the members market, since sales aren't allowed outside of there, thrudge should probably remove/edit his post before getting a suspension.
Looks like you dont have access to it yet though, since you are new :(

If you are specifically after IPS gsync 144hz, then prices might come down a bit, as more panels get developed and more manufacturers release models using existing panels. Along with the higher hz 4k panels coming out. I dont *think* anything is expected which will drastically drop their prices though, just a little bit of competition so sales and the like might happen.

Personally, I very much like 144hz over 60hz, and gsync is lovely, but not as important imo, at least at how expensive it is. do you normally use Vsync? or live with tearing? Skipping Gsync saves a lot of money. the difference between 120 and 144 is also negligible, and ULMB etc doesnt work above it, so might save some money there too.
Its really up to your budget, if you can afford a fancy shiny monitor now, get it, if you think they are too expensive, then wait. If you wait long enough you could then go 4k 100+hz when the gpu's are there to run them. Really depends how long you think you would wait, "cheap" interim monitor cost may mean you end spending the same/more and not ending up with a better monitor.
According to users on this forum the Asus swift TN model is meant to have great colours, for a TN panel, although expect it to be crap if you also use it for movie watching so as such you are viewing from an angle. TN is what "pro" fps players like, since they dont care about colours as much, and just want response time. VA is probably a good all rounder, although im not sure if there are any high hz ones.

I tend to like samsung screens too, although I havent used any in the range you are looking at, at least recently, so can't comment.
Acer I tend to avoid, purely as they are "cheaper" brand and as such build quality/customer service tends to lack a little.

http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/ has great in depth reviews of all the popular models of monitors, so its worth checking them out on any that you consider.

That's an excellent reply mate, thank you very much, very helpful.

Yikes, my apologies to the mods and to everyone else - I didn't realise I was breaking the rules. I'd happily remove the offending post, but I can't see how to do it. Could somebody advise me, please?

Also, where can I post about stuff I'm selling? Sorry if I'm being a bit dim here, but I can't find the relevant part of the forum.

The for sale section is invisible until you have 1000 posts.
Great for those who have been around for ages, but no help for you (or me)

Not great for someone like me who tends to read but not reply. :)

I am still no further forward really in my quest. My XB241H goes back tomorrow and I've no idea what to replace it with. I had pretty much decided on the Asus MG279Q but everywhere you read, there quality control is horrific and you can go through 5 screens before getting a decent one. I think the same panel is in an Acer predator but the QC seems better. It's just the price is ridiculous in comparison to the FreeSync equivalent.

I am at the point where I feel like just getting a cheap monitor until newer ones come out in the future.

I can't see the for sale section :( rip.

As good as Acer and Asus could range from terrible to mediocre in QC terms. I've never used a AOC screen but it looks squarely aimed at the master race so chances are...

I am hoping it's good, I purchased it this afternoon after reading about it. It seems every bit as good as the Asus and Acer for less money. Here's hoping for no QC issues and I will be very happy.

Just wanted to say that even though reviews of this monitor said out the box the colours were not accurate, it is night and day to the TN panels I've had. There is zero BLB and an all round beautiful monitor, first impressions, extremely happy.
