Having "everything on one device"

So I have a smartphone, but it's not just a phone, it can do everything else as well as being a phone. The irony is that it's just not as good at its prime function - making phone calls - as, say, browsing the internet or running apps etc etc. It seems that these days, for a lot of people who want smartphones, making calls is one of the least of their considerations.

The phone has a clock so I shouldn't need a watch, an alarm so I shouldn't need an alarm clock, music software so I don't need a dedicated mp3 player, a GPS so I shouldn't need a sat nav, a camera so I don't need a compact, and a PDF reader so I shouldn't need... books.

All this would be well and good apart from that fact that having everything in one place is becoming a massive pain in the arse. If I want to know the time I have to dig for the phone in my pocket rather than glancing at my watch, if I want to listen to music I have to get the phone out, go to the album, scroll through the list and find the track. However, if I want to do the same with my mp3 player I reach into my pocket and press one button without even looking at the device. As well as that, a phone can never compete with a proper camera in the way that a laptop can't run most maxed-out games.

The upshot of this is that I have gone back to wearing a wristwatch and having a dedicated mp3 player. Not least because my phone seems to think it pertinent to turn the volume down for me every few tracks with a message coming up on the screen saying "warning, volume too loud can damage hearing!".

It seems that the simpler a device's task is, the better it is at doing it. Maybe one day this obsession with having everything on one device will diminish once we realise dedicated hardware is much better at it.

Who else has found the same or will we evermore strive to live our lives through one hand-held oblong?

"Jack of all trades, master of none" is the saying I think.

I still use my mp3 player when walking around for the reasons you said. I use my phone in the car though and stream music as it integrates with the bluetooth controls.

I use to wear a watch but the battery has run out so I don't currently.

I much prefer using my PC for any 'real' task, however I do use my phone for lots of things.

I also have a DSLR and hardly ever use my phone camera unless that's all I have.

Lol,

What rubbish with your spin on it.

Your mp3 player can not select the song you want with one click.
They are the same amount of clicks, or at best 1 click less.
Phone, unlock > play
Mp3 unlock > play or play

Neither will select the song you want with one click. At least compare like for like. MP3 player if you want a certain song, you will have to go browsing for it.

Do you really look at the time that often it's a chore getting something out of your pocket?
Smartphones are great, and yes the call feature is essential, but used far less than the other features

Edit- should have looked at OPs name first..

And seriously, mobile phones have been telling the time since they were invented. Why does this mean you've now stopped wearing a watch?

What a strange response.

My mp3 can indeed select the song I want with one click. It's called the skip button which is on the front of the player. And there is an 'album change' button on the top. My phone doesn't work the same way. You have to unlock, go to music player, go to menu, go to albums and then choose one.

Yes I do. I time myself to the minute in the mornings.

Not everyone lives their life the way you do.

Hmm, my phone has taken the place of my watch, MP3 player, and camera, although I do have a Kindle for books!

And as below, in Spotify you can set it so that pressing the power button with volume up will skip.

Lol the skip button, how can that magically read your mind and select the song you won't, do you realise smart phones have skip buttons.

So no it's not an odd comment you're talking rubbish.

Agreed, with my phone if i just wanted to play music at random (which is all the mp3 player would do with one click), would be to take phone from pocket, double click on the home button (iphone) and then click play. It's hardly a lot of extra touches. As you say, if I want a specific artist/album it would require extra steps but the same would be true of an mp3 player.

If anything with the adition of SIRI, I can even now just press a button to activate it and then say “Play music by The XX” and boom it’d do it with much less touches than my mp3 player.

I love being able to do everything from my phone - it makes everything much more convenient and its certainly a lot easier to press a couple of buttons/menu choices than it is carrying around half a dozen other bits of kit.

But thats not straight to the song you want with one click, thats scrolling through all the albums one click at a time and then to the song you want one click at a time.

If you have hundreds of albums, you could argue it'd be much easier to just open the media player of the phone and scroll to what you want.

Do you have my phone? No. It has no skip button on the lock screen. And even if it did I would have to get the phone out of my pocket which I don't have to do with an mp3 player.

Your mp3 player can not select the song you want it's one click, that's the end of it. You realy are odd.

Ever thought about getting a better smart phone, rather than carrying multiple devices around, which is heavy awkward and probably costs more.

You're effectively offsetting the convenience and practicality of having everything on 1 device with the inconvenience and impracticality of having everything on 1 device

i think it's mad to carry around an MP3 player as well though, surely you can download another music app which doesn't turn your volume down and something with a decent autoskip function? wearing a watch less so.

It's the phone, not the app. I have tried different apps unfortunately.

Read the OP properly, I do have a watch.
