Having overclock problems - any ideas?

Hi everyone,

I've got an overclocked bundle from OCUK that seems to be misbehaving.

When trying to boot up from cold the system just hangs and nothing is output to the screen. Fans are on as they should but nothing happens to finish the boot. From here I have to switch it off then on again and the boot completes.

If I go into the tweak menu in the BIOS I'm informed that a boot has failed

I've been in touch with OCUK support a bit and theres not yet been a solution. We've mainly been tweaking the voltage for the CPU.

Any suggestions?

I'm new to Overclocking which is why I got the bundle with OCUK. With this issue happening on Cold Boot too its tricky to test as I have to make a change then wait till the next day.

My system is here:

Intel Core i7 930 2.80Ghz overclocked to 4GHz
Gigabyte X58A-UD3R (BIOS Version: FC)
6GB RAM
Power Supply - CoolerMaster Silent Pro M series 700W

One suggestion made by OCUK was that maybe its the power supply but I'm not sure and dont have a spare - it's brand new and a pretty expensive piece of kit. Any thoughts on this? Other recomendations for Power?

thanks

Ben

doubt its the psu. i would say some of the setting are not quiet right with the OC. i would send it back and ask them to sort it and send it back when it is. should not really have to mess with it when you paid the extra for a pre built overclocked pc

If it's falling on deaf ears, maybe ask to speak to a manager? As clearly you have paid for a product that you havent received.

May help to keep a record of who you have been speaking to.

I've had this problem in the past.

It was doing exactly as you say, I lived with it for a few months, until it completely died.
It turned out to be a dodgey stick of ram.
After the ram was replaced the fault was gone.

Might be worth removing all the ram apart from one stick and retry.

The bundle was returned a month ago because the motherboard developed a fault that stopped it from booting - something started overheating. What I have now is my bundle back with, I'm told, a new motherboard.

I checked the RAM for problems in the past but as everything has only just been with them I'd hope I dont have to try this again.

I've emailed the member of staff I last spoke to and asked for this issue to be escalated and looked at as some kind of priority given tht I've paid for OCUK's expertise.

Latest: following advice from OCUK I've now upped the VCore voltage to 1.35V but still nothing just more failed cold boots.

The service I'm getting from OCUK is ridiculous, no one seems to take responsibility for looking at an issue, instead I'm left hanging on, having to call up more, spending more money on calls with no solution.

I got a rather arrogant and dismissive response when I called up today and have asked now that they take the bundle again and replace the lot. Emails, even when theyve been sent to their Complaints address lead to nothing and there seems to be no consideration or focus on helping with my problems. What a joke. I will never buy a bundled system from OCUK again and I'll do my best to advbise anyone else I know not to bother.

We'll see what happens now once they've got my system. If things still dont get sorted I dont know what else to try.

This company's treatment and level of consideration for it's customers is disgusting.

Something is definately a miss here. Doesn't sound like a PSU problem but either motherboard / RAM. How long has it been since you bought the bundle? At the moment do they have you kit?

Worth running a Memtest on all individual sticks RAM.

Keep a history of all correspondence and names of staff you've spoken too.

Should be getting better service than this! If the bundle is not stable they should be looking at testing it together and replacing it if found to be faulty.
