Hi,

I would really like to try folding, I just don't know if it is worthwhile doing it with my current rig.....I have read the quick start guide & got most of it into my noggin (kind of), I just don't know what to expect of my rig & really what I should be running to make the best of it.

The parts of the PC that matter are:

Q6600 @3.6, watercooled.
MSI HD5850 Twin Frozr II

I downloaded the FAH Tracker app in the guide Biffa made & it is running on SMP right now, currently saying 4% complete & 6.104.9 PPD.....is this normal?

Should I be running a GPU client too? I have been reading that some/all current ones are pretty much pointless on my card right now.

Thanks for any help in advance, sorry to be so dim....

Hi BeeP

Welcome to the team :) 6K sounds pretty good for a Q6600, I think I only ever got 4-5K out of mine.

Although there is a new client/core for ATI GPUs it uses a fair bit of CPU power and the work units are still terrible. It isn't worth taking CPU time away from the SMP client, especially given the power used by a 5850.

One of my rigs is a Q6600 at 3.2 and it gets nearly 7000ppd while also running two 8800GT clients so 3.6 should be higher than you're getting. Do you use the computer much yourself or is it dedicated to folding?

Thanks for the comments, more or less what I've read but it's better to have it confirmed.

The PC I use is my main one, I know it's far from the best but I really would like to think I'm doing my bit in this noble cause.

Right now the PPD section says 7,986.4 which according to what I've read seems quite ok for my rig.

Cheers guys, I really appreciate the welcome & the help.

Welcome to the team BeeP.

As echoed above the 5850 will make a big in the CPU performance, PPD looks spot on to me if not a little more than I would expect

EDIT: Did you set the -advmethods flag and a passkey?

Yep, just though lol.......I can't seem to check what I have done PPD wise but I guess I just started so maybe I have no records yet.

I'm confuzzled (easy done I know)

When I run the folding prog it says my PPD should be anywhere between 6,000 & 10,000 but when each job is done I only get the points in the other box (something like 585 etc).

Am i doing something wrong again or is this normal.....I just want to be normal......just once.

That is the points the unit is worth, due to the way it works with the SMP client you need to successfully return 10 complete units and maintain an 80% success rate, this means the when you have completed your 10 units those 585 point units turn into 2000-3000 point units depending how long it takes to return them. The FAH GPU tracker is using the bonus calculation to give your PPD estimate hence the difference.

Hope I've helped, if not I'm sure Biffa, Dekez or one of the more experienced folders will be along shortly to assist

You are normal! (I think :p)

The other box is the amount of points you get for the completed unit, each unit is worth different numbers of points, the PPD is the predicted amount of points you would get in total for a day if you left everything running 24/7.

So if for example you completed 1 unit per hour, and each unit was worth 100 points, your predicted PPD would be 2,400.

edit: beaten by FN like a ginger stepchild.

I forgot about the bonus, if you are doing SMP after 10 WU you will start to get a bonus on top of that providing your passkey is set up ok. The program would be predicting this already, but you won't actually see the points until you've completed the 10.

Thanks all, again. I'm sure it's not the last daft question from me.

Takes me more like 10 hours to do one WU rather than 1 per hour though lol.

Thats normal, Dekez was just using 1 hour as its a nice round number to use as an example.

Don't worry we've all asked what seem like daft questions when we're starting out. Some still even now.

Flaming xspc and their smelly tubing, the Mrs says the pc can't run overnight because the new tubing reeks, she is right too.
Ordered some new stuff, hopefully stink free this time, won't be here till wednesday at best now.
