I think if you compare 0xAA to 4xAA, there should be a unusually large drop in performance.
slam it up full 24x AA then you loose fps but fps stays above 50-60 on most games at more than 16xAA ish, i run 8x tho its more than enough for me.
but once the new drivers are out to fix the AA the better so that people stop saying "haha the new ati card is rubbish because of the antialising performance drop".
But when your on a game, do you notice 10 fps difference to a GTX? when fps are allready sky high, or when your in game do you notice fps drop at all, awnser equals No, unless you check the fps every nano second
But fps is high at 1680x1050, it works like a dream
