HD 4870 X2 Problem!!!!!

Ive got a bit of an issue with my graphics card (HD 4870 X2). I have posted in recent threads about my computer freezing on the load up screen and then games graphics going all weird etc. I tried a replacement card (GTS 250 512mb) and all was fine, no freezes or any proble at all.

So i sent away my card to where i bought it from and the said they done an overnight test and it was perfect so are sending it back. Now its going to come back and im back at square one. So can anyone suggest anything that it could be?

Its a brand new built computer:

I7 930 CPU
Asus Rampage 2 Extreme Board
6 Gb Geil Ram
2 x 1 Tb Samsung Hard Drives
1000w Coolermaster PSU
Coolermaster V8 CPU Cooler

Ive tried everything and the last thing i tried was a replacement GFX card which solved it. But apparently its fine . So any advice would be much appreciated.

I tried loading up in Safe mode and it's still freezing on the windows load screen, also tried disabling all start up items from msconfig but still no change! As far as I'm aware all drivers are fine! Strange how I put a new gts 250 card In and it's fine!

Did you buy the card from brand new or was it pre-owned?

What is the condition of it like? Temps? Do you get any graphical corruption?

Have you looked at device manager to see if there is a problem there?

Has it been overclocked or the cooler changed? Anything like that?

Sorry, I haven't read / can't remember your other thread so excuse the questions. :)

Hi,

I was purchased brand new and it hasnt been overclocked or anything, It was from straight out the box. What do you mean by graphical corruption? When in games and i switched from windowed to full screen the graphics would go all distorted and id have to reset the game. Temps were around 70-80 deg (c) if i remmember right.

When you get your card back, perhaps you could you take a few pics and post them here so we can see what's occurring?

Btw, what is the vendor? Gigabyte, Asus, Sapphire etc.?

Just to be sure, I take it those temp figures you mentioned are in game and not idle?

Graphical corruption is when (not always but usually) the memory chips are knackered and one sees dots, bands of lines, basically a distorted image.

Mine has a back plate on the rear of the card, this helps to keep the temps on the memory chips within acceptable limits, does yours have one of these? (I assumed all 4870X2's did.)

Em yeah i think it does, The vendor is Saphire. Yeah the temps are when playing a game.

As for the graphical corruption, im not getting what you are describing.

The only pic i could take is of windows load up bar, Sometimes windows loads no problem then the next it freezes and i have to reset over and over again until it passes that load bar. When i am past that stage everything is fine, all screens are ok. Then when on a game its works fine for a while then it plays up.

Well, from what you say I think that you do have a worthy case for rma. It's certainly not unheard of for someone to send off a faulty card, only for it to be returned with a supposed 'clean bill of health'.

I'm not sure what else to suggest, other than to continue to press home persistently but politely your case with wherever you bought it from. That can and should eventually get you a replacement of something roughly equivalent.

Hopefully someone will post some other ideas.

Btw, what driver are / were you using?

Yeah i have stayed polite with them from the start, I asked about warranty and they said it had 90 days, but when i sent it it was 97 days, typical !!

I dont think i can say where it came from can i? As id like a bit of advice on the company wether they are good or not or have history of this sort of things, Not that im doubting them, just curious.

This is what i got from them:

"LEFT ON TEST OVERNIGHT, NEVER ONCE CAUSED SYSTEM TO CRASH [PLAYED ALL GAMES FINE INCL COD BLACK OPS"

90 day warranty, so it was a refurbished one? Or did you have 90 days left from when you originally purchased it?

What driver were you using? 10.4, 10.5, 10.6 etc. ?

No you can't say where you bought it from, at least I wouldn't advise it. ;)

Edit : Just re-read an earlier post of yours, sorry, I see you bought it brand new. :o

Well it was a clearence item but i re checked all the mail and reciepts i had and couldnt see anything about it being used or refurbished, as thats what i first thought. The guy said on the phone that the manufacturers warranty was 90 days from date of purcahse. and id had it for 97 days so warranty had just expired. He then said hes not promissing anything but to send it in and they will look at it.

arc@css - you have pm

If you bought it new by law you have 12 months warranty call trading standards if the card is indeed faulty they would be telling you porkie pies

Thing is how can i proove its faulty! they say they tested it and its fine, i put it in and its playing up, What i could do is try it on a friends system.

That's probably your best option right now, if it doesn't replicate the fault then it's 'possible' it could be confliction elsewhere though I do highly doubt this is your issue here. Imo you more than likely have a knackered card. :(

Test it on a friends system is a good idea also if it is faulty sent it directly to sapphire, Unless it is a reburished card but if it is and they are selling it as new trading standards is the way togo for sure.

this is from there site, having a look around just now

"Clearance Items
All clearance items are supplied with a 90 Day Warranty unless otherwise stated."

I paid £280 for this on their site.

Thats what il do, once it arrives il test it on my system again, then if it doesnt work i will test on a friends.

As for the Drivers am i best to get them from the main saphire site? And can someone comfirm which i should be going for? Just want to make sure im doing it right.

Thanks
