.. Get some cans of compressed air and a paint brush to clean the fans and grills and use a vac with a small attachment to suck up the dust in the case.. Maybe worth you buying some fan dust filters too.
I would expect this to be something related to the fan. Try taking the side panel off your case while your PC is on at the desktop and put your finger in the center of the gpu fan to slow or stop it for 1-2 seconds and see if the noise stops. If so then you know what the problem is and if its still under warranty, replacement time![]()
Needs cleaning i'm sure, after seeing all that dust on the fan grills of that pc .... also after cleaning just make sure to push in the centre of the fan with a little pressure to see if it clicks back in place.. Them fans on the 5870's reference are known to come loose sometimes and applying some pressure on them makes them click back in place.
All they will do on that card for RMA is clean it and click the fan back in if it's loose.. Try what I said 1st if it still clicks and cleaning does not reduce the sound RMA it.. but honestly think you should spend some time cleaning it and maybe a dab of WD-40 on the fan bearing or some machine oil.
My corsair memory cooler was noisy from day one and all I did was spray a little WD-40 in the fans and they have never made a noise since and this is atleast 18 months after doing that... Just make sure if you use any oil to not over do it and make sure to clean any extra oil.
I have the same problem with my Asus reference 5870. When the PC is cold and is first booted the fan will make a horrible grinding noise like a lawn mower but will eventually quiet down after about 5 minutes.
This has been happening for several weeks and today I emailed OCUK and they asked me to RMA it for a replacement. The actual card works fine and it's just the fan causing a problem. I see that only the XFX version is in stock and am worried that I will receive one of those as a replacement which isn't really a direct replacement as it doesn't have the metal backplate and doesn't overclock so well not being the reference design. (Read that in the reviews) and has a years less warranty.
If it's true that OCUK will first try some oil and push the fan back on then that's going to be a waste of time me packing it up and paying postage for something I could probably do. I was just thinking it's less than a year old and I shouldn't need to fix it.
Not sure what to do now and I wouldn't be happy receiving the XFX model.
I took the side of my case off today and checked for dust. All was clean so applied a little pressure to the fan. So far all is good but it has also been quiet in the past and then come back a few days later.
This is what makes a RMA worrying. It could be tested and found not faulty and I will be charged £10 plus p+p for it's return. The problem could come back again and we could just be going around in circles.
The RMA ticket has a 28 day expiry so I have a little time to decide what to do.
