HD 7850 and Xonar DSX - Sound over HDMI?

Only having recently got back into the computer market I'm noticing that a thing some graphics cards can do is output audio over the HDMI. This is news to me! :)

I've got a MSI HD 7850 Twin Frozr III graphics card and a Xonar DSX 7.1 sound card.

My surround set up for my cinema room is 7.1 and I'm putting it all through an Yamaha RX-V667 AMP.

At the moment one of the HDMI outputs from my graphics card goes to this amp which is then fed to my projector. I've also got an optical cable coming from my sound card.

I'm wondering if with my current setup I can get rid of the optical cable. Instructions for my sound card suggest it can but I'm not sure if my graphics card supports it despite having built in sound itself. What am I looking for to see if this is an option?

Is getting rid of my sound card an option? How good is the built in sound of graphics cards these days? :)

Cheers,
Roy

You can, but will lose some sound quality. As you have 7.1 surround and a £400 amp, to use the graphics card instead of the sound card it seems like a bit of a waste.

not really as optical doesn't have sufficient bandwith to carry DTS master audio or the Dolby one, so use HDMI you don't really need the soundcard.
Been through all this myself with my shuttle

I wouldn't bother with a sound card if you have hdmi input on your receiver :):):)

Graphics card will be able to do all the codecs and all the game no messing about perfect every time.

Optical is outdated.
