HD 7970 Resolution issue. Please help!

I just built from scratch a new computer with a HD 7970 Graphics Card. on a 3 monitor setup

I have installed the latest drivers and adjusted the resolution to what each of the monitors support.

1920 x 1080

but I have a big black 1 inch thick border around the screen(s)

its like its reduced the size of the desktop by 20%

If I plug the monitors in to the onboard intel graphics they display fine .

I can not find any problems in the monitor setup options and all looks ok in the ATI Control Panel.

Also do I need a active adapter to run Eyefinity from this card?

Connections are
Screen 1 HDMI
Screen 2 HDMI - DVI
Screen 3 HDMI - DVi

Yes, you will need an active adapter to run one of your screens:

Screen 1 HDMI - HDMI
Screen 2 DVI - DVI
Screen 3 miniDP - active miniDP-DVI adapter - DVI

or (if you can find one cheaper):

Screen 3 - miniDP - active miniDP-HDMI adapter - HDMI

If you're running up to 1920x1200, you only need a single link miniDP-DVI adapter, if you're running higher than that you'll need a dual link one (more expensive).

thanks for the reply. slightly confused though.

Ok so my monitors have
2 x HDMI Ports
1 x Old VGA Port

My Graphics Has 2x DVI 1XHDMI & 1 Display Port.

Nothing has any Mini Display Ports

Cables I have.

2 x HDMI - HDMI
3 x HDMI - DVI


so what is the best option for me?

Sorry, I thought your list in your first post was your monitor connections, and I thought nearly all 7970's came with 1xDVI, 1xHDMI, 2xMiniDP. Oops!

OK, on your GPU you have 2xDVI and 1xHDMI. You will be able to use any two of these at once, but not all 3 (unless you have a Sapphire FLEX model, and I don't think they made a FLEX 7970). Your third screen will need to run off your Displayport connector, as your monitor doesn't have Displayport, you'll need an active Displayport to HDMI adapter, or an active Displayport to VGA adapter.

From what you've just described, I'm thinking:

Screen 1 - DVI - HDMI (using one of your existing leads)
Screen 2 - HDMI - HDMI (existing lead)
Screen 3 - DP - Active DP to HDMI adapter - HDMI (need an adapter, but you've already got the HDMI-HDMI lead)

or

Screen 3 - DP - Active DP to VGA adapter - VGA (if you don't have a VGA lead hiding anywhere, you'll need to buy one.

Does that help clarify a little?

You need an active Displayport to DVI adapter. OcUK doesn't seem to have any in stock though so you will need to search elsewhere. You can get active Displayport to HDMI but they are more expensive.

The first two monitors can be connected via VGA/DVI/HDMI, but the 3rd and above monitors must be connected via Displayport.

Do you mean Active DVI -DP as the montor does not have DP?

Basically the 3rd monitor needs to connect to the GPU's Displayport. That port can only output Displayport signals hence why you need an active adapter to convert those signals into VGA/DVI/HDMI. A passive adapter just rearranges the pins and does nothing to the signals.
