hi

ive just connected up my new xbox hd addon , ive heard it can be updated over live, but i have had no messages to say it needs updating?

i put a dvd in but no update message, does it have to have a hd movie in to get a update message???

its just i thought being new it would need a couple of updates??

cheers

trying to remember if mine needed updating.

I need to put the CD in to get the 360 to recognise it and for it to appear on the dashboard, have you done that?

Does it all work ok? tried a HD-DVD?

Can you actually watch HD-DVDs? As you shouldn't worry too much, you'll probably have got the update with one of the Xbox 360's updates earlier this year or something.

well its brand new so i have not got any hd dvds yet,

its just ive heard people saying that updates are released for it a lot so i thought it would proberly need updating?

Has the 360 recognised it? Did no intallation disk come with it?

If it doesn't ask to update, then it probably doesn't need one. Only time it could ask is maybe when you play a HD-DVD or a DVD, so try that.

ive installed the software cd and put a normal dvd in which it played ok but did not get any update messages, perhaps like you say it does not need one?

thinking of getting planet earth hd set off a big online retailer but they seem to be used or new from other suppliers if i got it would it be a us version as the uk ones not released yet?

Hmm, the UK Planet Earth is out already however it isn't released over here yet, so your only choice is US import sites like myself and others have used. It'll be cheaper too. Importing HD-DVD titles is the way to go for the most part.

The US Planet Earth has got narration by Sigourney Weaver so avoid that at all costs.

As for the update, when I had my 360 HD player I didn't get an update until my second day. I fired the 360 up and hey presto, there was an update there so I wouldn't panic just yet. That update CD you used could have the latest update already on it too...

also i believe that if you have installed previous dashboard updates that may have installed neccessary drivers too.

when i installed my wireless wheel i didnt need any updates even though others had.

I don't think the HD-DVD drive needs updating as you will already have it as your 360 itself is up to date and that probably is enough.

cheers everyone

just one thing,if i got planet earth from US how would i know who is doing the commentry?

obviously i want the master sir david

cheers

i think you do need a HD-DVD in before it promots for an update. i dont think you get the update with the regular dash updates though, i know my 360 is up to date software wise and will promot me to ge tupdates for the HD-DVD drive occasionally, last one was a couple of months ago

im really struggling to find a site that does hd dvd at good prices?

any hints

cheers

Its not worth getting it. Very soon(anytime pretty much) there will be under £200 HD-DVD players soon which are much better. The HD-DVD 360 add on is much worse than any player a supermarket will ever sell. The other thing is HDDVD itself not likely to last.

Best to go Blu Ray or good dual format players come as Blu Ray has much more movies and scratch resist disks making them very rental friendly ;) Much safer investment and not a low quality temporary toy.

hi

well its a bit late telling me this when ive just got one, to be honest i cant say how anyone can tell what format will win ,when its still early days?
Not just that but i thought hd was doing well recently with a couple of big labels crossing to hd, also i thought BRay was more exspensive to produce, dont they take up more space on cds?

also how can you say a 360 addon is worse than any supermarket player?

He's obviously talking out of his rear end, or is bitter about a certain big label ditching blu-ray.

Under £200 players better? Thats strange as my 360 HD-DVD player in some cases out performs my new Tosh HD-E1 standalone player. The 360 HD-DVD player is regarded as the best value entrance to the hi-def market. As for build quality lol sorry I can't stop laughing at his comment about PS3's being better media players than a PC right now.

For people wondering where to get a cheap HD-DVD (stand alone), OcUK do them for £182 inc VAT. But since the 360 addon is under £100, if you have a 360, they are a great deal.

As for good HD-DVD film deals, the best bet can be forums, as they often list great deals etc. Shops do sell them at reasonable prices but since they are region free, importing is a great option.
