HD Audio Microphone Query

I have a new PC and a little teething trouble. I am using Vista 64. I have no sound card and am using the Rampage Formula motherboard onboard sound card. Within Control Panel->Sound, I can see that there are two microphone entries. One microphone remains unavailable permanently and the other microphone remains enabled all of the time. HD Audio does not recognise when a microphone is inserted or removed from either the front or rear panel but it does correctly recognise front and rear panel speaker/headphone insertion/removal. The microphone that remains enabled all of the time is the jack on the rear panel, which is unfortunate as I would rather use the front panel for headphones. If I install the manufacturer audio driver, the front panel microphone jack functions ok, which proves that the cable is connected but has the side affect of removing differentiation between the front and rear panels. So, in effect, my headphones become the system speakers.

I would like to get to a state where both mic jacks are correctly identified under Windows HD Audio. Has anyone come across this before please?
