I've been upgrading my home cinema setup recently which consists mainly of an HTPC,Sony SXRD rptv and an Onkyo 875.I'm in the process of putting together a 7.1 speaker system, consisting of JBL studio L series speakers,so far I've got floorstanding fronts, centre and surrounds.Subwoofer and surround back channel yet to be added.
Using the HTPC for HDDVD playback via a tosh optical drive and PDVD Ultra, will be adding HD DVD and Blue Ray standalones for HD audio over HDMI once I've got my head around which ones to buy,may yet go for a PS3.
I've connected my sound card (Asus Xonar D2X) to the Onkyo via the Multi channel outs of the Xonar to the Mch inputs of the Onkyo in a 5.0 configuration, can I sample the new HD sound formats this way with appropriate soundtracks?
I've set my Xonar settings to output PCM 192Khz and set the Onkyo to Multi-channel direct, the sound track from the movie 300 sounds absolutely phenomenal with these settings but I'm not quite sure if I'm hearing HD audio or not,it certainly sounds better than the Dolby and DTS formats over SPDIF.
I'm still finding this subject of HD audio from PC very confusing despite endless trawling of AV forums/Avs Forums and various other resources.
Any help on the subject would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
