HD Disconnects

Hey

Tonight my External Hard Drive has started disconnecting randomly whenever my iPod is connected along with it. I can use it on its own, but it only happens when I introduce the iPod.

I think its something to do with the power to the USB's following some research, but i cant find a decent solution.

The first thing I would try is updating your motherboard USB /chipset drivers

Hey people, ive updates all everything and the problem still occurs only now the hard drive disconnects while plugged in on its own.

Its a USB powered samsung s2 500gb drive.

any idea? :S Cheers

- Go to computer management -> Disk management and verify whether you have sufficient drive letters, normally windows allocates automatically a drive letter to newly connected devices. verify whether your HDD still exits while connecting and after connected.See whether the drive letter changes.

Does the drive spin down as if it's being powered down? You could try disabling

USB selective suspend in advanced power options for your power plan.

control panel-system and sec - power - change plan settings -advanced

Potentially uses up battery faster on a laptop if you do that btw.

@bnpnu70 the HD was given drive letter D, I reconnected it and it was given F. Surely they should be the same :/

@OptimaLnrg I tried disabling that but the problem still persists

Also, When I plug it in I get another drive with the letter Q. Ideas?

the drive Q is named m4-ct128m4ssd2 ata device, which is my SSD and also my C drive. Ideas on that?

C = 128GB SSD
F = External Drive
Q = Not sure, but is called m4-ct128m4ssd2 ata device [which is the driver for my SSD]
