I did a silly thing today, assuming my iMac could play HD DVDs I went out and bought one, only to get it spat back at me after much whirring.

Not a huge problem really, but what would be the best (if any) solution to playing HD DVDs on my iMac?

Your all correct. Xbox 360 HD DVD Drive does show up on a Mac, the wonderful thing is Apple's DVD Player will not play it. So what's the solution. You can play an HD DVD in DVD Studio Pro and there are third party software that does support HD DVD on a Mac as stated above it is a matter of code. Simple enough to fix lucky HD Drives are supported on macs. the easiest way however is if you have an intel mac install crossover on in and install WinDVD or POwerDVD something with HD DVD support via CrossOver and use it throught there or you can just wait two months for leopard and it's native support. Next generation MacBook Pro's will also be shipping with blue ray and hd dvd drives. - I'm a developer i know.

I think the *best* solution would be to return the HD-DVD to where you purchased it from... If it is a high street retailer then just 'act the idiot' and tell them becuase you had a HD telly you assumed your DVD player would play it.... If you can't return it then flog it on a well known auction site or whatnot.

To be honest even if your Mac had a hi-def player I wouldn't bother with hi-definition media.... On a 24" you'll be hard pressed to justify the extra expense.

Warner Brothers just signed exclusively to Blu-Ray.

You can pretty much count on the next Macs to include Blu-Ray players, and HD-DVD going the way of the dodo :D
