just seen a trailer for spiderman in 720p. the quality is fantastic. when will films actually be released in this high quality on dvd/hd dvd/blueray?
looks like they trying to milk dvd for as much as they can then release the same films in hd and get more cash. its the same way vhs did.

They shouldn't be too long, they been in US for a while. I heard that the HDDVD is gona come with the DVD version on one side and the HDDVD version on the other side but I'm not sure whether they're gona make this/or is a reality yet.

Pardon my ignorance, because im clearly wrong, but wasnt the whole hoo haa about dvd is that it held enough data to make a better picture.
To what resolution is it encoded to then? Or was it just a sharpness thing?

DVDs compared to VHS had a much better picture quality due to the higher bit rate (I think the resolution was just standard PAL on both).

However HDDVD has the capacity to store 720 and 1080 lines of vertical resolution, much much higher than DVD.

Dvd = UK 576i and US 480i . So either 480 or 576 line interlaced.

720p is more lines and a tru progressive picture. It also uses much better compression so the jump is quite marked if done well.
