HD Microphone Input Very quiet

I have an Xfi Sound card - however because my MB is so small (matx), the 8800GT fan is pushing straight onto this reducing its air flow and causing the gfx card fan to go into overdrive when playing games.

I've therefore removed this and am trying out the HD Audio. However the microphone input is very very quiet. I have boosted the mic and have it on max but I can just imagine if I get into game people are not going to be able to hear me.

In the bios (asus) I set up internal and external codecs - does this refer to front and back panel - if so I need to just change this to internal - not sure if that will make a difference.

I also plan to do a driver clean as I am not sure if any old sound drivers/codecs could be causing an issue (device manager looks clean).

Anyone else find their microphone on hd is quiet?

Finally anyone thoughts on whether AC97 maybe a better way of going or is HD much better. I have seen some references that said this could be a solution.

I had the same problem when temporary disabled my X-Fi. One option is to use a separate USB mic or USB headphone/mic combo.

A seperate USB mic is an possibility but don't really want to do that. I'll have a play re cleaning drivers and trying the AC97 and report back - unless anyone has experienced this and found a solution

Good luck, I gave up on AC97 and luckily got my X-Fi working again with a re-install.

The xfi I can get working - the trouble is because it blocks the gfx card that goes into overdrive to keep cool :(

Hmm just been reading up on changing the fan speeds of the gfx cards - apparently 90% is a lot quieter than a 100% so I may revisit this :) Certainly would prefer to use my sound card.

How about mounting a 120mm fan directly over the graphics card. Get one of these:

If your case has a side fan vent make sure you have a fan installed. The combined cooling of 120mm fan blowing directly on to my graphics card and the card's fan speed set to 60% have kept my overclocked temps way down.
