mkv is just the container, not the format =]

H.264 is a format though so Op could use avi, mp4, mkv etc to contain it.

What is a bit lame about that profile "list" is that it doesn't show you what resolution it is encoding at for each standard profile (avi for example), unless it does elsewhere?

I mean file format anyway...or if you're being picky, file extension...so container. :p

H.264 + mkv is a good and very popular choice...idiots use WMV and end up with balls videos.
 
You want a video of my ba.....perhaps not :p

I use H.264 in .mp4 containers via Mediashow Expresso, uses GPU to encode so even 1080p encodes fly \m/
