Just a quick one, this could be done in theory on an R88, via component yes? A VGA connection may offer a slightly better picture but its only really necessary to get this if it appears by picture quality you 'need' it?

HD can be done with component, VGA or HDMI cables. The quality of the image you get on each cable really all depends on your TV as they all vary.

You would be able to get 720p from component via your TV, the only difference with VGA would be that you can get 1366x768 resolution which would be 1:1 pixel mapped... though there is very little difference in picture quality between the two

Cheers guys exactly the info i was looking for!

Some tellies do 1080p via component. You can only play games in 1080p, you cant view upcsaled dvd's or watch hd dvds via component. The only quality dvd you can watch via component is normal.

It goes like this for quality:

Hdmi= Best
VGA
Compoment
S video
RBG Scart
Scart
Composite
Areial= Worst

This is only the general consensus. It could vary with tv and cables used.

Oops i meant you couldnt watch hd dvds above 720p. This is from avforums, the 360 faq:

HDMI:

* HD DVD - 1080p resolution and all others
* DVD - Upscaled as high as 1080p resolution and all others
* Games - 720p games upscaled to 1080p and native 1080p games

VGA:

* HD DVD - 1080p (1920x1080) resolution and all others
* DVD - Upscaled as high as 1080p resolution and all others
* Games - 720p games upscaled to 1080p and native 1080p games

Note for VGA, 720p is the resolution of 1280x720 and 1080p is 1920x1080. All signals via VGA are progressive, it is not possible to do interlaced with this cable.

Component:

* HD DVD - 1080i resolution maximum, limited by AACS
* DVD - Standard progressive 576p maximum, limited by CSS
* Games - 720p games upscaled to 1080p and native 1080p games
