I have a 500gb hard drive on my desktop.

The main OS is on the 500gb along with games etc etc its around 75% full.

I want to put a 128gb ssd in the desktop to have the OS on it, how can I do this without reinstalling windows 7 etc. I want to shift as much as I can onto the ssd and then the games etc on to the 500gb.

You could ship off enough space, to bring the OS volume down to say, 100GB.

Then ghost the drive onto the SSD.

Then move the stuff as you like.

I would really struggle to bring it down to such a size, is there a way of shifting installed programs that are on my OS drive to my d drive with is a 2tb hd.

I'm not sure ghosting to an SSD is a good idea. I don't have one at the moment, but I'm willing to assume they will benefit from their drivers and proper set up for smooth running.

I still think formatting is a critical part of keeping a computer quick. I'd take this as an opportunity to think about how you keep your files and the OS so you can quickly format and be back up to speed with as little hassle as possible.

On the other hand, I would agree with a fresh install over imaging any day. That is what I did a few times in the past too.
