I currently stream HD video, among other things, over my network from a file server. I recycled my old PC into a HTPC running XP and Media Portal. I've chopped and changed some parts around, but at the moment, the spec is as follows.

Shuttle SN95G5

AMD Athlon 64 3200+
512mb PC3200
X800 Pro

When playing HD Video on this machine, it stutters, the sound comes in and out of sync, and whilst it's watchable, its the kind of thing that grates on me.

Possible causes for the stuttering?

Network?
Memory?
GFX?

Thanks :)

FFDshow installed.

I will double check all my codec issues though.

Chances of it being hardware?

Try copying the file locally. If you don't have the issues, then it is network.

Try playing the file with realplayer or vlc player. Sometimes one will work well when the other is choppy.

Mine did this on my old machine, power dvd checked my system for hd playing ability and said my cpu was not fast enough to cope, it was either upgrade the cpu or to get a video card that would handle the decoding instead of using the cpu to decode, if that makes sense.

HTH
