HD2900XT woes

I've just replaced the X1800XT in my other machine with an HD2900XT, before installing the 2900 I uninstalled all of the driver bits and bobs using the uninstall tool and then ran Driver Cleaner, I powered off, installed the card, powered on, installed the Cat 7.7's but all my games are reporting that there's still an X1800 installed, I enabled show hidden devices in the device manager and it's only showing the 2900, I went through the registry and tried to remove as many of the entries pertaining to the X1800 as I could find but a few of them wouldn't delete.

The only choice I had was to re-install Vista, anyone else had this problem upgrading from a previous gen ATI card? I can't think of anything else I should have done prior to installing the new 2900 so I'm stumped.

Wow thats really strange, I would download driver cleaner from guru3d for free :) then you can use that to remove all traces of the ATi software and then install again :)

Please read my post again ;)

I'm talking about going from a previous gen ATI card to a 2900 and I did mention that I'd already used driver cleaner.

It appears someone else had a problem on rage3d with the same thing happening with their x1900, they had to edit one of the .inf files to cure it, sounds like a bit of a hash up to me :(

Edit: Oh, and no matter what ANYONE tells you, they are bloody loud and run bloody hot.

Maybe you need to delete a ini or settings file of the game(s)?

I thought that too, so I installed Rfactor (which had never been installed previously) and that assumed I still had an X1800 too.

Maybe I'm just unlucky.

Correct, but at least thats 2 owners of the cards I know here that admit they are hot and loud and in general not the best card today.

There is some others who seem to think a miracle driver is going to fix the cards or that they will excell in DX10 over the 8800's, we have not got real DX10 games yet only ports but there is benches in this forum showing the 8800 on top of the scores for DX9 and DX10.

I prefer Nvidia and can admit the FX5000's were crap but if these ATI card were better than the 8000's I would admit it, but I think they are duds, there is no point kidding yourself on about the facts all over the web.

It looks like there is still a reference to the X1800 in the registry somewhere, but where  :(

Still, that is something Driver Cleaner should have picked up and deleted.

Yes, and as I've mentioned I tried to delete all the entries relating to the X1800 from the registry but there were a few that wouldn't delete. I was a bit surprised DC didn't get rid of them either, guess I won't be relying on it anymore.

I gave up on DC long ago, it could do more harm that good.
Unistall your drivers, delete the obv folders it leaves and then run CCleaner or TuneUp Utilities 2007 :)

FACT is the current ATI flagship is not as good as a 8800GTX or Ultra, I aint gonna bother with GTS 320 or 640, I also went by input in this forum not just websites.

There is owners of the card here claiming its hot and loud so I will take them at their word over a website.

Dream on if you think that card will get far better and be the DX10 king.

Far from a dud, it beats the GTS 640 in most benches even with AA on and you refer to it as a dud, what is it with theses nvidia fanboys and having such insecurities they find the need to put everything and anything not nvidia down. Oh yeah, my temps are fine and the fan sound is not a problem.

There are 3 threads today with owners of these cards not happy with them be it perforamnce or heat+noise, do you need me to link to these threads or can I let you find them yourself.

I still dont give a monkey about GTS 320 or 640, its about the GTX/Ultra for me.

There is nothing for Nvidia owners to be insecure about this time round, the cards are the better cards.

To the OP, try doing a search for .inf's, rename one you think could be the cause of the problem and re-boot. Rinse/repeat for each .inf you think could be involved. Put the original filename back for each if it doesn't work. Kinda long winded but not sure what else to suggest. :(

try this

1. Click Start
2. Click Run
3. Type cmd.exe in the textbox and click OK
4. Type set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1 and hit ENTER
5. Type cd\windows\system32 and hit ENTER
6. Type start devmgmt.msc and hit ENTER
7. When the device manager opens, click the View menu
8. Click Show Hidden Devices

this will not only show you hidden devices but devices which are no longer present in the system but windows still has a record/entry for - see if theres still any X1800 entries there.

If that don't work i'll post the location in the registry that you need to look at to delete the currently installed video drivers

EDIT - just noticed you are using vista - not sure if the above still works as it was designed for xp but try anyway .

Sorry if this is too old but may help, and remember System Restore will keep record so I would turn it off during this.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

ATI drivers do not always uninstall/update very well so I have my own foolproof method to make sure that everything goes as planned. This is geared towards WinXP, but the principles are the same in all Windows OS's. This the closest I can get to a clean install of ATI drivers/SW that I have figured out short of a reformat.

You will need to do the file deletions in the \system32 folder while in safe mode (press F8 during startup and select Safe Mode).

Items you will need before you start:
Download all of the necessary drivers from here
Download and install Regcleaner (the best registry tool out there) from here.
System purging procedure:
Uninstall all ATI SW, drivers, hydravision, MMC, remote SW, whatever because it makes it easier to clean up your system and it won't cause problems when restarting. Don't reboot until everything is uninstalled.

Delete the following directories while in safe mode:

C:\ATI
C:\Program Files\ATI Multimedia
C:\Program Files\ATI Technology
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Raviscent Shared

note: you may not have all of these depending on your card type, just delete the ones you have
Clean out the C:\Windows\Temp directory. There is a chance there are some driver files in there as well.

Go to the C:Windows\system32 directory, make sure you are in detail view and right click on the header (where name, file type, date modified...is) and select more and check the box for Company. Then double click on the Company header and then delete all of the ATI files in there. Do the same for the C:Windows\system32\drivers directory.

Go to the C:\Windows\inf directory and delete any file that starts with ATI (open the inf files in notepad). Then go down to each file named oemxx.inf and open it, delete any that refer to ATI. Make sure that you delete the corresponding .pnf file as well.

Run Regcleaner. Delete any ATI entries.

Empty the Recycle Bin.

Unplug your internet connection or disable it. (Mainly for WinXP) If you don't Windows will try to download a driver for you and install it.

Reboot

Driver/SW install

Install the WDM drivers For AIW cards only. Do not reboot.

Install the Display drivers (Catalyst). Do not reboot.

Install the Control Panel. Reboot.

On startup Windows will install all of your HW went it boots and it will take a few minutes. If you are using a non-AIW card you are done. For AIW users, there are two more setps:

Install the MMC DVD Decoder SW. (may require a reboot)
Install the MMC SW. Reboot.

Well that was fun.
If I have to delete any more posts by RavenUK, Gerard or helmutcheese they'll be some juicy suspensions coming, back on topic :)
