ok, so i have a cool, stock overclocked HD3870. And i like it.. But it dawned on me that i could flog it and get an 8800GT from here (i like the PNY one on TWO)... Should i? is it worth the increased price, the hassle, and the loss of (crippled) Xfire performance later down the line, as i was planning to go for XfireX in like September or so and get a 3870X2 along with a q6600

Games i've been playing are Crysis, Bioshock, CoD4, CoH: OF, and Kane's Wrath - all of which are handled pretty well, except Crysis. oh, and i wanna grab WiC. most of the time i leave the card at 80/1125, but for Crysis i up the clocks to 880/1180

gaming res: 1680x1050, on Vista, with the rig in my sig. and i only have about £120 max to spend.

not much of a upgrade to me would get a better cpu first

crysis is not going to be a lot better

slightly but not a lot even the best rigs sli xfire still struggle at highest settings

Whilst the GT is better than 3870 the difference is pretty minimal. So i guess it depends if you can be bothered for a pretty minor performance boost.

if you are getting an itch to mess around with something you can always pencil mod it a bit :) with 1.4ish vGPU you should be hitting over 900mhz...the 3870 really flies at clocks liek that

As long as you dont go too crazy with the voltage and keep temps under control I dont think its any different than overvolting a CPU.

My 3850 has been overvolted since I bought it in december and it has shown no signs of degradation. Temps are 70s on stock cooler @ 1.45v 910 core

i am running a q6600 and 3870x2 and think that u sould spend the money on the cpu and the get a second card for xfirex as it should pwn running 3 or 4 gpu i am planning on a second x2 soon i think

also nothing much can run crysis as well as it needs to be run with out spending a hell of a lot best bet is stick with x2 get a second card and wait for ati to fix everything with drivers :D

The performance is about a 1/3 better than the 3870 overall (at least that's how I see it), so if you can flog your 3870 for close to the gt's price then do it :)

i dunno. I owned got a 8800GTS 512mb after owning an overclocked 3850 and didnt feel the price was worth the extra performance. Grabbing another 3870 for crossfire cost a bit but performance is REALLY noticeable now, whereas before it would slow down quite a bit with heavy AA.
