HD3870 HDMI Output Issue

Got a strange issue with my AV setup and a new computer I've just built. Basically I have a Onkyo 605 AV receiver, which I use as a HDMI repeater for my xbox and sky currently. Tried plugging the HDMI port from the 3870 into it, but theres no signal. If I plug the 3870 straight into the TV, then it works perfectly.

Any one got any idea why the card isn't outputing when I plug it into the Onkyo box? I know the AV receiver is setup correctly, as I've just unplugged an AppleTV box and I'm using the same port and cable.

This could be unrelated but have you got one of the earlier or later 605's?:

A number of things were improved with the newer firmware, but these were mostly related to codec support if memory serves. I don't use the HDMI switching on my 605 tbh and I know that the hdmi switch can be a bit fussy.

Is there a specific reason for using the switch on the Onkyo? To simply things av-wise or just because it happens to have it and you needed switching?

I got the models confused, I've got a 705.

The reason for using the switching is so that I can have surround sound from all my devices. Plus my TV only has 2 HDMI ports on the back and I've currently got 3 devices which need it. Also it makes switching between the devices a lot easier.

I could plug the HTPC straight into the TV instead, but then I'm left with doing something else with the sound. At the moment theres no extra sound card it, and I don't think theres any room for one either.

Whaat is the motherboard? In a lot of cases the later realtek onboard solutions work very well for Media centre duties. I was using Audigy2's etc etc on all of mine but a few months ago swapped over to the onboard and was really surprised. Haven't gone back.

Not sure if/how the switch works on the amp if it is off but if you used a dedicated HDMI switch then you would have the luxury of possibley not having to have the amp powered on at all times. The sky box outputs on optical as you know so that is a non-issue and all you would need if using onboard sounds would be either a 3.5mm jack to single phono cable connector or just a phono to phono connector if the onboard has a spdif output prefitted.

http://hdcompany.co.uk/product_info.php?cPath=1_28&products_id=48 - is an option for you. While I haven't used that specific switch, I have A CMI splitter and HDMI-cat5 CMI baluns and they work perfectly! Just an option :).

Latest ATI Catalyst? I have 8.6 with a 3870 and a Onkyo 606 - no problems here.

Onkyo HDMI set to through? Does the ATI catalyst detect your receiver?

Just updated to the latest drivers (8.7 I think) and its made no difference. I don't think that catalyst is detecting my display as when I try and enable the second display (when I'm viewing through VGA with HDMI plugged in), it just disables it instantly again.

Onkyo HDMI set to through

What do you mean by this ? I've gone into the setup of it and made sure that HDMI IN 2 is assigned to the DVD channel on it and then set it to that channel.

Not sure if its relevant or not, but the HDMI message on the Onkyo stops flashing and displays stereo after a couple of seconds when switching to that channel. If I remember correctly, if it doesn't detect anything if just keeps flashing doesn't it ?

he means set your amp to pass through mode for the hdmi input.

what signals can your amp recieve? you probably need to add a format or something from the hdtv section in CCC if its there

Also have you installed the Realtek HDMI driver? If you have done, check that it's still not using the windows driver as it doesn't seem to always pick it.

The amp can do 1080p and the TV can receive 1080p as well, but when I try and force these resolutions on inside CCC the options still don't appear. The only ones I get are the standard widescreen PC ones (its current running at 1360 x 768 over VGA).

Something I've just checked though is that the PC can only do up to 1360 x 768 over the VGA port, which might be the problem here. Maybe I need to get a DVI->HDMI converter, plug it into the second HDMI port in the back of the TV to force the correct resolution and then try and switch over to the actual HDMI port.

RE: Problem with HDMI

HDCP will not allow you to output to 2 screens at the same time, not sure if this is something to do with it but unplug your VGA lead and just use HDMI to see if that changes things, i have a HD2600 xt and wanted to use plasma and computer monitor but could not watch bluray whilst doing this. Had to unplug my 2nd monitor.
Regards,

Phil.

If I just plug in the HDMI cable and reboot the computer I get no display at all.

The AV box is definately picking up a signal though because the screen goes black. If theres no signal at all you get a blue screen. The thick plottens...

EDIT: Oh and I installed those Realtek drivers and I can see the HDMI option under sound but can't hear anything either. Apparentally the Onkyo box won't process sound until it gets a video signal as well.

do you see any options in CCC that relate to your amp? i have my monitor and my hdtv listed. in my hdtv section i can force a hdtv setting and that allows me to change the resolution and refresh rate to a signal my tv can accept (i get no signal on my tv like you describe if i dont do this setting)

not sure how CCC detects an amp but it sounds like its not sending a signal your amp can recieve

Only thing I see is the SonyTV listed but I think thats the VGA connection I have plugged in.

Think I'm going to have to go straight from the HTPC into the TV to get this sorted. Will have to try and dig out the addin card for the motherboard as well so I can output sound correctly.

Oh great now even going straight HDMI->TV isn't working either >.<

I'm completly stumped what I can do. I tried plugging both monitor and TV into the pc, but only the monitor showed up. I shutdown the PC, unplugged the VGA cable and then restarted the computer. No image at all.
