I have a Powercolor PCS 4850 512mb at stock clocks. I intend to crossfire it at some point (when the single card doesn't cut it anymore).

Do I have to use the same model of card?
If I use a different card, does the faster card scale down to equal the slower one?

Thanks.

No

Yes

ATi cards don't scale down to the slower one, they can both run independent clocks.

How does that affect performance? I know that the scaling is never linear, but is there a predictable average between the cards?

Could be interesting if I wait for the new Radeons later in the year...

Did not know that. I also dont think i would miss match video cards. Like have one 4850 + one 4870. I wonder how they would scale together. Or would you get more FPS using a 4850+4870 set up then just a 4850+4850 setup.
