Hi

I have an ATI HD4870 card in my rig and it has been performing well. Lately ithas been geting very hot. Yesterday I turned my pc on and as soon as it got into windows ,the monitor ( a Benq FP731 ) flashed and the pc went off. Now the monitor wont turn off unless I pull the plug on it and the green power light just flashes and the Benq logo on the screen appears and disappears.

I tried a second monitor and no joy. The PC boots as I get the startup beep, so forgive me as I am a bit of a noob , am I correct in assuming it is my card that needs replacing? And if thats the case how much improvement would the 5770 give me?

Thanks in Advance

Any chance you can try the monitor on another PC, use a different VGA/DVI cable and using a different power plug? Also I would recommend dusting out your 4870, I had one and they got really hot when even when a little bit of dust clogged the heatsink.

You'll lose a little performance from the 5770, it'll be more of a sidestep instead of an upgrade, maybe try stretch a bit more for a 460 1gb if you do need a new card.

Hi yeah I tried the monitor on a diff pc but nothing. I dusted the card and still nothing. I am limited to £100 - £110for the card ........ Any ideas what the best bang per buck card would be?I only use my PC for playing WoW and Championship Manager as well as playing mp3's

Cheers

Get a 6770 for £83, same core and clock rates as the 5770 but some new features. If you have Vista/W7 you will be able to enjoy the DX11 patch for WoW with your new video card.

Have you checked the fan on the graphics card is still working, or maybe even the case fans? could be the cause of overheating.
