Vista 64bit

Hi Guys,

I built my new pc about a month ago now, i ran 3DMark and the 3D rendering parts casued no problems. Until today when I installed Oblivion, i didnt do any gaming or 3d rendering just normal work, or dvds. It does run flawlessly with everything cranked up :)

Anyway so it usually crashes about 5-20-30 minutes into Oblivion. Sometimes PC just locks up no artifacts other times it has locked up with artifacts all over the screen.

bugger.

hmm so i put the card in my old XP machine and ran through the first 1 and 1/2 levels of CoD 4 and no crashes. Which is a bit annoying. When i took the card out of the XP box the card was a lot hotter to the touch than in the huge Comos box.

Any ideas would be great, i know artifacts usually mean ballsed video mem

...probably cant RMA after a month (im on the 34th day), on warrently now?

EDIT:

No overlocking, just stock.

cpu temp (BIOS) 26.5.C, MB 39.C | PC PROBE II (AT IDLE): CPU 22.C MB: 39.C

cheers
Ed

I think you do not have enough power for you setup – in full load.

I'm pretty sure you can RMA to the retailer for the first year after you purchased under UK law.

that is correct, any item over the value of £50 has a minimum of 12months
guarantee

his psu looks fine to me ..... costing nearly £100 and sli certified should handle the card fine
i did not look at the rails though ....

one thing i would suggest is try to use seperate cables for each component as i have found that some psu's
dont like to have cables shared (sort of defeats the purpose of a modular psu)my enermax liberty 500watt hated having more than 1 item
connected to each cable.

Hi Chaps,

the two 6 pin power cables run off seperate rails, and have nothing else attached to them.

I did try DOOM 3, alas it crashed too.

Latest Vista patches, latest firmware revision, second update of Obliv and updated the ATi to 8.11 or whatever it is :(

I run a 4870 on a thermaltake purepower 500w with no problem (along with a quad core 4 gig ram, 3 hard drives and a dvd burner)

it may just be heat related..have you tried manually increasing the fan speed to drop the peak temps of the card..thought these cards do run hot..maybe yours is just a little bit too hot?

Well i put my X1900XTX Graphics card from my old box into thenew machine, then played DOOM3 for about 45 mins and Obliv for 40 mins. No crashes or artifacting. Although that has only the single PCIe power connector, rather than the duel one on the HD4870.

It does seem that the problem is fairly and sqaurely the HD4870. one for the RMA.

FTM,

i will give your idea a bash first.

If it runs O.K in XP then its not the actual card more like a driver or Vista problem. Is it a Sapphire as I know they had problems with some HD 4870's and theres a bios update for them.
