Hi all :)

Got an HIS Ati Radeon 1GB HD4870 for Chrimbo and very happy I am with it too.
Un petit question though...at what point does the fan kick in when leaving it set at auto? It seems to reach some very high temps before it does. Is there any way to change the default behaviour for the 'auto' setting?

ATM I'm just running it with manual settings at 25% through RivaTuner.

you can set the fan speed to manual in catalyst control centre under ATi overdrive which is what i do (i set it around 30%) and keeps it under 55 degrees at load and 39 idle. The card gets very hot if you leave it on auto which is why i changed it to manual. But i think i remember ATi saying the card is safe up to 120 degrees celcius or something silly

Set up some fan profiles in RivaTuner. On my X2, I have it set up so the card never rises above 65c idle, and loads at 85c.

dont forget the aftermarket coolers like accelero and trad-2 will lower the temps significantly as well as the noise :)

i recently installed a trad-2 on mine and am well happy with the results

I always see people complaining about the temperatures of 4870s, but has anyone ever had a card that's died from overheating? I'm fairly sure they're designed for high temperature operation. I'd much rather have a quieter life than a cool graphics card.:)

got my fans set to 50% in ccc
42c idle and around 65c load (only checked after exiting a game though)
but my card has a dual fan cooler which is a LOT better than the standard stock coolers
