Hi, this is my first post. bought some kit recently - all yummy deal of the week stuff - and want to connect my pc to my hdtv.

A few months ago i had my old card, a 9600gt connected to the tv via hdmi. worked...but no sound. Had to use the pc for sound. Now i have the xfx hd4870 and i want to try it again. Am i missing something really obvious? How do i get the sound to come out of the tv as well as the picture?

Would really appreciate some help, although i'm not even sure if this is the right place to post this kind of thing. It is gpu but its also tv.

I believe the DVI->HDMI adapter that comes with the 4870 should carry audio, so long as you have the correct drivers for the audio processor on the 4870 installed? (at least I'm lead to believe this, I've not had the chance to try it) I'd give more feedback but I don't currently have an HDMI enabled TV to test with.

###the sound on these ATI cards can be input via hdmi. The card should have been supplied with a dongle / convertor. Unlike normal convertors, this one carries sound too. The card has corresponding hardware. This should show in device manager as 'ATI audio' or similar. From Catalyst 9.3 driver onwards, it is included in the graphics driver.

quixote thats spot on did the other day on me g/f tv

just check if u got a setting to accept sound over hdmi on the tv and enable it

You also need to go into control panel and set the default audio device to the HDMI from the 4870, then it will work as said above.

thanks guys

Cheers guys, I appreciate the help. Havent been able to try it out yet as i've had to move my kit and my hdmi cable is too short now. I'll get a longer one and try it out.

Thanks

That's exactly what you have to do. Install 9.3 and HDMI audio driver, set default audio device to HDMI Audio, make sure your TV is on before the PC and you're done.

Works well if you rig it into a decent AV setup as well, as the output quality is actually pretty decent!
