HD4870 with sound over hdmi question

Good question, i have the same Graphics Card and Sound Card, although i have to ask if you're only using the monitors speakers will it make any difference? I use the SPIDF out on the Xonar card to a 5.1 AMP (it has no HDMI) and the graphics goes straight to my HDTV (no sound just picture).

I guess you'll only get stereo at best from monitor speakers?

I dont use the monitor speakers, the monitor outputs the sound to my logitech speakers. I want to mainly find out if the graphics card has an spdif input so i can connect it to the output of the sound card.

I see...

Must admit I've actually taken out my Xonar card as i wasn't that impressed with DTS connect, i'm now using the on-board sound as i manly use the PC for 5.1 TV/Films and the AMP does all the work.

I'd like to hear what others have to say...

Cheers

i think a 4870 has onboard audio.

My gtx285 comes with a cable to connect it to a audio card so can connect it to either mobo or sound card.

I have onboard sound and a SoundBlaster X-Fi card. I only ever used the X-Fi card for sound but when I started using my TV as my monitor via HDMI, the X-Fi card is bypassed completely. The 4850 uses a Realtek Audio IC that takes control and sets itself as the default audio output device. At this point my creative software is useless and I have to control everything using the Windows 7 sound control panel / settings.

To be honest, I haven’t noticed any difference as far as sound quality is concerned. Apparently there can be issues with 5.1 surround sound not working, in which case you have to download the ATI Realtek driver but I’m only using the stereo TV speakers for now.

So correct me if I’m wrong but I believe the onboard audio on the 4850 / 4870 overrides any existing soundcard currently installed. This may not be the case with later cards but I certainly haven’t discovered otherwise. I think some graphics cards pass through sound from the existing sound card via a cable (nVidia?) which to me sounds like a good way of doing it, as I’m sure that for a lot of people audio / connectivity from say... a Xonar card, would be preferable to any integrated Realtek solution.

I never used ATI sound, but once by mistake i have installed drivers for it which has disabled sound from my sound card, that makes me think you have to use one or another, cant do both, might be wrong there, but it does make sense
