About a month ago I bought two HD4890s, one for me and one for my son.

Mine works fine but my son is having trouble with his.

It's fine in windows but as soon as you try and play something like crysis it crashes very quickly, even in resolutions that we know were fine with his previous card (a radeon X1800).

To me this said PSU especially as his current PSU is a fairly elderly Trust 520W so doesn't have much on the 12V rail.

So took delivery of a Corsair TX 650W yesterday, wired that up and same old crashes.

So that got me thinking of a faulty HD4890, so I swapped it out with mine - and it works fine.

In the meantime I've put my old 8800GTS back in his machine and that works fine.

So any idea what it could be?

In summary

(1) Nothing wrong with HD4890
(2) PSU is new and more than enough
(3) System works fine with X1800 and 8800GTS

Cheers,

Nigel

So your son's 4890 worked fine in your PC?

If that's the case, you're more than likely looking at a software problem, not hardware considering the other steps you have taken. I would do an uninstall of all display drivers, then follow that up by running Driver Sweeper in safe mode to clean anything left over out then installed the latest Catalysts.

have you tried reinstalling the latest drivers? Does it artifact or just crash?

Try running atitool and see if it detects any yellow squares or artifacts.

Just crash.

I did use drive sweeper before installing the card.

Used the drivers that come with the card - the same as I did with my machine.

The frustration is that I may have spent £72 on a PSU that I didn't need - mind you it is a very nice PSU.

Cheers,

Nigel

best to avoid utilities like driversweeper and drivercleaner these days...

Try the latest cat 9.9 drivers from ati.amd.com
