I recently got this card a few weeks ago. I have been having fps problems on CodMW2(recently installed) bad company 2(also recently installed). I have not noticed it in other games as they dont require much. I recently had a 9800GTX which ran all my games fine, but that card just seemed to die after 2 years.

I'm quite new to building, so sorry if this post enrages you. :)

I was told by some people I play online with that this card will run in my pc with no problems. Is my card faulty or is it a setting I have? Or my resolution is to high? (1920x1080)

Any help would really be appreciated.

Thank you.

Fps on some games is very low when it shouldn't be.

The 9800GTX was a directx 10 card and would be limited to playign Battlefield Bad Company 2 to DX9/10 whereas the Hd5770 is Directx 11 which is very demanding, I suggest you double check the settings and turn of the DX11 features and see if that makes a difference (you might also want to get the 10.10 drivers from AMD).

I know I sound like a noob here, but I use XP. Is that limiting its potential? XP 32bit which only uses dx9 right?

Core 2 duo E8400 3.0ghz
2gig of ram Corsair
Western Digital VelociRaptor 150GB 10000RPM SATA-II 16MB Cache
Windows XP Home Edition
Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 5770 Vapor-X 1024MB GDDR5
Gigabyte GA-EP35C-DS3R Intel P35
Hiper 880W HPU-4M880 SLi Certified ATX 2.2 Power Supply

I have not tried the 10.10 ones yet but I have tried 10.4 10.8 and 10.9 all give me the same low fps.

i would take a look at ram and cpu usage while you are playing, maybe that is a factor holding the card back, when you say low fps, how low are you talking, also make sure bloom is set to false in the bfbc2 settings file and then set the settings file to read only as it tends to enable itself

Stock CPU is holding it back along with the 2GB RAM : ).

OC the E8400 to 3.7+, add another 2gb of mem and that should help quite a lot.

I had an E8200 running on the same board at 3.6, so you should not have any problems getting it above that.
I may be wrong here but Xp dosnt have Dx11 does it?
Try turning HBAO off in BFBC2?

I dont know how to OC a cpu, I know there is guides online, but I dont know if they are all correct. Also ram suggestions? Nothing super pricey please. :)

Also what is the average fps you guys get in BC2 @ 1920x1080? mine varies from 30-60. The fps drops in CoD to 30 all settings have been tinkered with and it still doesnt stay above 60, it only happens in certain maps some maps I get constant 90+. It runs games like FEAR2 fine, which I thought was very demanding(probably wrong).

Plenty of guides and help on e8400 on this forum, just have a look around ; ). Most of them were hitting 4.0ghz+ easily so 3.7 should be fairly easy without much messing around.

To answer your question directly, a 9800GTX is slower than a 5770 and uses a lot more watts.

The 5770 is the superior card - a 9800GTX is the same as a 4850/5750. A 5770 is more like a GTX 260 in most games.

I'm not sure what to suggest - MW2 runs like silk on my 5770 at that res with a 3Ghz Q9650, which should perform the same as your E8400 as it isn't a quad core title. Have you forced really high AA in catalyst settings or something? That could drag down your performance.

But rest assured, a 5770 is faster than a 9800GTX.

I have not forced any AA in CCC or ingame.

My 3d CCC settings are:

Standard settings: Custom
AA: use app settings
AA Mode: Super-sample AA
AF: use app settings
Mipmap: HQ

I have changed them round to try most of the settings, still not working. :(

Thanks for the answers so far tho, very informative.

Easy: the CPU is bottlnecking. Those games you mentioned will nuke your CPU. I had to get my Q8300 above 3.0Ghz (2.5 stock) before it stopped affecting my frame rate in BC2.

OC some more, or go quad.

Get some monitoring software to see what your CPU is doing. My CPU runs at 3.150Ghz and still all four cores are around 70% during BC2.

Agreed. Question is the ram though. If it's ddr3 there's tweaking needed, if it's ddr2 clocking to 3.6 is brain-dead (and safe, even the worst chip will reach this at safe voltage).

Really though, 4gb of ram will make such a difference.
