Well this site got recommended to me as a good place for buying parts, and I was delighted to find out they have a forum.

As I've been putting up with a god awful integrated card for some time, I'm near enough desperate to upgrade, so I'm thinking I should go for a pretty high end card. But there's a slight problem. I've noticed that these high end cards are pretty beefy and because my computer is a prebuilt, it's a pretty compact deal. I see this card comes in all shapes and sizes, and I'm wondering, which would be the best card for a space conscious gent such as myself? For a little reference, here's a couple of pics I took of the inside of my PC a while ago. (excuse the unclean floor)

Thanks for any help.

From the pictures, it looks like the hard drive cage at the front of your case is not removable, but also that it might sit higher than the pcie slot and not interfere anyway.

Is the bottom of the cage higher than the pcie slot?

5850s are 9.5inches long (if on the reference printed circuit board) and need a further inch clearance at the back for the power cables. Though on some cases the power cables can fit inside the hard drive cage without touching, others not. Measure the distance from the blanking plates to the cage.

The question here is more likely to be is your power supply capable? 5850s need 2 6pin graphics card power plugs, and are likely to come with 1 molex to 6pin adaptor in the box.

As far as I'm aware, the PCI-E slot is below the cage. Well my power supply is only 450w, but I was intending to replace that anyway.
