Right, im having a bit of bother with my beloved HD5850...

it seems to be dieing... on boot just after the POST the fan makes a ******* awefull noise, a great cross between screaming in pain, grinding and death.

and apparently its performance is dropped despite overclocking.

im thinking my card is for want of a better word, ******. any sugestions that dont involve money first off, and second, any other sugestions in general.

any help will be greatly apreciated.

35*c ish according to GPUz, and under fair use its about 50 ish i think...

as normal is it has been.... BUT it is pretty cold, snow outside and i dont like putting the heating on as they dont work and cost a lot...

i have lookad at it when cleaning, and seems to be full, problem is i dont have the box anymore i dont think, and i bought it pretty soon after release and cant remember if its 1 or 2 years warenty,

Maybe the wire is catching?

Afaik all the reference 5850s at release (Oct,Nov 09) on OCUK were 2 years at least.

If you have taken apart the cooler it should look like this.

What does this mean?

it means i cant type what i mean, i ment fine not full, it could be the fan catching, despite holding the fan and setting it back level seems to stop the noise...

took the thing apart, cleaned it all properly again, and it seems to have slightly helped, but not fixed it, its slightly quieter, and easyer to stop it initialy, but its still occuring.... slightly miffed...

Now you have taken it apart you have cleared up whether it was an easy fix or not.

2 choices remain. RMA, which you can now do with some confidence that they wouldnt take it apart themselves, easy fix it, claim it wasnt faulty and charge you.

Or £30 on a custom cooler. Would be an easy decision if you knew you could carry it accross to your next GPU like you can in the cpu market. But thats not usual the case with graphics cards. And its £30 on something thats probably about 1/2 way through your time with it. Upside is you will be able to overclock with a custom cooler, and 5850s can get a good 30% return. Coolers for previous gen GPUs usually sell for £10-12 second hand, so you get some back.

i was thinking about an aftermarket cooler as im not sure it will RMA well it being overclocked and all... BUT i dono what kinda cooler to get, i know usualy bigger is better, BUT i dont realy wana make it a 3 slot card, i have space for Xfire, but if i buy a PCIe sundcard any time soon i dont think id be able to fit it in physicaly, and if i xfired it i would get another cooler for heats sake and for asthetical correctness.... sad thing is i dont have £30 to throw arround atm. sucks being a student at times and still cant find a damn job!!!

all being said i still cant find the recept or box anyway, so RMAing it might be tough.
