Hi all

Been offered a HD5970 for £50 but not sure what it will cope like at 1080p gaming on ETS2 mainly

Not expecting it to be mental performance for this price

Cheers

Im pretty sure a gt 1030 would have better performance, and also more up to date drivers, for about £70-£80 if you look around and can afford that much.

In games where Crossfire works the 5970 would be a decent amount quicker than a 1030.

However the 5970 is frankly ancient (and the last drivers for it were issued ~2 years ago).

For similar money used, you would be better off looking at any of the following:
AMD: 7850/7870/R7 260x/R9 270/R9 270X
NVIDIA: 660/660Ti/670/750Ti/760/950

which all perform at least similarly, but with the benefit of current drivers.

is a useful "rough" guide to how graphics cards from different generations stack up.

The HD6850. I know the price of my card, not yours, but mine is more powerful so I think you're being overcharged.
The 5970 is considerably more powerful than a 6850, being essentially based on 2x slightly downclocked 5870 chips (where a single 5870 is slightly more powerful than a 6850)

Would i be better adding extra £15 and getting a 1030, do i look at core clock speeds when looking for a GPU

Core clock is meaningless on its own.

Personally I wouldn't buy a 1030, but if that's all your budget allows, then it's really the only option buying new.

Worth bearing in mind however that most of the used cards I listed above perform considerably faster, with some of them being nearer in performance to a Geforce 1050.

Ahhh thanks bud great help, ill have a look at the used market see what i can find... I havent got a clue what to look for to determine what card is better than another

Still have my HD5970 and I play 2560 x 1600 plays everything but BF1 only because of drivers. Very good card I suspect you will be pleasantly surprised.

I still have a pair of HD 5970 cards but with only 1 GB of VRAM per GPU they are extremely limited in what they can run.

The HD5870/5970 were mining legends so their price has been kept artificially high for years, it is in no way indicative of their performance.

If you're going used then there are much better cards available for under £50, I.E HD7850.

I wouldn't bother with the 5970. Hot, power hungry, loud, crossfire dependant.

As said above. It's ancient. Driver support for this card stopped ages ago. It doesn't support anything over DX 10.1.

The fact that driver support stopped years ago and it needs crossfire profiles to run well it will be a waste of cash.

Save you money and by something more modern.

The HD 5970 is a DX11 card but yes it is very ancient.

Or you could do what I done took the risk on an untested 780 Ti for £20 and it actually works which is much faster than a 5970 :D look for a gtx 670/680 if someone is after a quick sale :)

I agree, utter waste of time unless it was literally free. A 2nd hand GTX670 or GTX760 2GB is what you should be looking at.

New, a 2GB GT1030 for £65 isn't the worst. Plays stuff like ETS2 perfectly well, uses barely any power and makes no real noise either.
