HD650 to 660S worth it?

Depends how well you are driving them at the very least IMO. 660S seem to get much more of the full potential without needing good synergy from the amp.

I wouldn't really call that an upgrade if as Rroff says.... If your headphone amp is driving them correctly. Depending on what amp you have that part of your link might be worth upgrading instead

Theres a Z reviews comparison on his yt channel, I won't link it as I think he swears.

Sure he compares to the 600 and 650.

Tyll @ Inner Fidelity does not rate them at all. Lost all the Sennheiser smoothness according to his listening.

I think if you have 650's there is no point.

I think Tyll's review was the odd one in a pool of generally good reviews. There have been people pointing out his comparison was not done well as the HD600/650 he used had old pads and the HD660S had brand new ones. The community has accepted, backed with measurements, that the HD6XX series' sound characteristic changes quite abit with the condition of the pads.

But are they really a noticeable improvement over the 650's, especially if you have a decent amp already? I wanted them when they first came out but as time goes on and I read more, I do not see the point over my 650's.

That I cannot tell you as I do not have the HD650 to compare it with. I am happy with mine but I think the RRP is too high on them. I did manage to get 20% off the Sennheiser store using a coupon code so that bought the price down quite abit.

I saw that review. He was downright angry at what Sennheiser had done to a legendary pair of cans.

Don't go 650>660S IMO.

I think it depends on what people's expectations are - the 660S isn't an attempt to make an end game headphone in the 600 series or necessarily to be a replacement for or to improve on what the 600/650 do.

They are more to compliment the line up and at the same time be easier to drive.

They are dropping the 650.

Most likely because the 6XX on Massdrop are selling like hot cakes. I have no doubt that the HD6XX will continued to be milked by Massdrop for years to come.

I saw Tyll Review of the 660's and he was more upset of the cable still been very long and them been easier to drive and more portable and still having the 3 metre cable lol

Yes but when you take a legendary design that wasn't easy to drive, and you make it easy to drive by dropping the impedance through the floor, you viciously murder smoothness and dynamics, and inevitably make the headphones worse.

Boo, Sennheiser.

There are already a lot of easy to drive over head headphones which are excellent (such as my Oppo PM3) and Sennheiser didn't need to do this.

As Billy Bob Thronton said, "You shouldn't a done that, he's just a boy."

Too many people basing their judgement on what they read, rather than what they hear.

I ended up sending them back last week as although good, I didn't think they were twice as good as the HD650 based off pricing.

I bought a brand new pair of HD6XX from auction for £195 and joined the drop for the HD58X from the refund with money to spare.

The HD58X essentially uses the same 'new' driver as the HD660S and the measurement is almost a carbon copy.
