After upgrading to a HD6950 a few weeks ago I gave me neighbour my 'old' Sapphire HD6850 (to replace his no good for gaming HD4850), which has worked without any issues in my PC for about a year. I installed it for him and it seemed to be working perfectly fine. But, he's now telling me that on first startup what sometimes happens is that the PC boots into Windows (Win 7 64 bit) but with a completely black screen, but with sound. He doesn't even see all the bios/startup screens, so it's as if the monitor is not connected. If he then powers the PC down and switches it back on it starts up boots perfectly and there's no issues at all until the next first startup.
He's tried re-seating the card and I popped round there a few days ago and completely removed all traces of the Catalyst drivers (reg clean etc) and re-installed the latest ones, but he's still having the problem. I even tried upgrading the card's bios, but that resulted in a BSOD as soon as the Catalyst drivers loaded so I had to flash the original one back.
Any ideas what could be causing this?
