HD6850 temps and cooling

Just wondered what the max safe temp is for the HD6850? mine hit 72 degrees last night, and whilst it's not the temp that immediately causes me concern it's the noise of the crappy little fan that tries to cool it.

Is it overkill to put an after market GPU cooler on an entry level gfx card? It would be more for noise reasons than anything else.

Any suggestions?

With stock cooler i hit 80 degrees+, but now with accelero twin turbo i never saw more then 52 degrees in sumer (room temp 29degrees, and card was overvolted and overclocked to the max).

If it goes over 90c then that's when you should start worrying. I heard 105c is the max temp though.

Thanks, so the temp isn't a problem but the noise from the stock fan is awful, shall I try pegging it with afterburner so it sees no more than 50-60%?

Which 6850 do you have. The MSI OC one?
If so I have the same and its very loud, tuning the fan helps but you need to make sure its fairly high when it gets close to the 80 degrees zone. I use headphones luckily so cant hear it most of the time.

I've pegged the fan at 60% which is where it starts to get intrusive, I'll monitor temps and see how it goes.

surely the rad will auto downclock or switch off before temps get too bad?

just like cpus do...
